John McEnroe is commenting on what he perceives is going on behind-the-scenes in the world of tennis when it comes to Wimbledon, and now he is likening Novak Djokovic’s recent stumbles as distractions with his private life, much like those of Tiger Woods before his personal life imploded. McEnroe said that when a top player like Djokovic has issues in their private life, their game could suffer. And perhaps the best example of this is Tiger Woods, who was king of the golf world before marital infidelity, prescription drug use, and a high-profile divorce derailed his career.
Novak Djokovic has presented himself as someone who has taken the moral high ground when it comes to his professional career, explaining to the press that he has been offered up to $200k to throw a tennis match in the past. Djokovic says he didn’t want to be tied to a cheating scandal but wants people to know that this is going on in the world of tennis.
“I was approached through people that were working with me at that time.”
He insisted that he would never be part of such behavior.
“For me, that’s an act of unsportsmanship [sic], a crime in sport honestly. I don’t support it. I think there is no room for it in any sport, especially in tennis.”
But while John McEnroe was not suggesting that Novack Djokovic was cheating at tennis, he was putting it out there that Djokovic was having some sort of “family problems .” But John McEnroe’s statement was fairly cryptic, leading people to wonder what he knows.
“[Djokovic] had some off-court issues with the family. That’s going to throw you.”
McEnroe added that when you are distracted, you are not the same person. And leading viewers to think that McEnroe is hinting that Djokovic is having marital issues, perhaps like Tiger Woods.
“When he [Woods] had the issues with his wife and then he seemed to go completely off the rails and has never been even close to being the same player.”
For the record, Novak Djokovic is married to Jelena, 31, and together they have a son, and she is expecting their second child. So why would John McEnroe suggest that Djokovic’s issues aren’t physical but mental?
But in his normal cool manner, Djokovic is shrugging it off, and McEnroe has yet to elaborate on what he meant about Djokovic’s private life. Novack Djokovic has admitted that he heard what John McEnroe had to say and says he has the right to express his opinion.
“Yeah, I have heard about it today. Look, you know, John has a complete right to say — anybody, really, in the world — has a right to say what they want, and I respect that right. Especially coming from John, because he’s someone that has earned that right because of who he is and what he has meant to the sport and what he still is representing as a former player and still being very active on the tour.”
Djokovic said that McEnroe is known for bold statements, and he doesn’t take any of it personally. And the comments about Novak Djokovic are not the only inflammatory statements McEnroe has made lately. Just last week John McEnroe commented that while Serena Williams is a great women’s player, she would only rank 700 if she had to play with men.

At this time, Serena Williams is pregnant with her first child and just wants McEnroe to go away. She tweeted a short and sweet response.
“I’ve never played anyone ranked “there” nor do I have time. Respect me and my privacy as I’m trying to have a baby. Good day sir.”
Do you think John McEnroe really knows something about Novak Djokovic or was he just seeking attention?
