Zoolander 2 reviews have been published and are not very flattering to the new movie. Zoolander No. 2 is scheduled to be released by Paramount Pictures on Friday, February 12.
This comedy is the sequel to the popular hit movie of 2001, Zoolander . Written by John Hamburg, Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux, and Nick Stoller, the new film has a wickedly good staff, but does not live up to its predecessor.
Ben Stiller stars as Derek Zoolander, Owen Wilson is Hansel McDonald, and Will Ferrell reprises the role of Jacobim Mugatu. Kristen Wiig plays Alexanya Atoz, Penelope Cruz is Melanie Valentina, and Benedict Cumberbatch plays All.
Quite a few celebrities give cameos in the film: Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Jourdan Dunn, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, and Ariana Grande, just to name a few.
Despite all the talent in Zoolander 2 , reviews have been highly critical of the film.
Entertainment Weekly gave the film a C-.
“… it’s been so long since we first met Stiller and Owen Wilson’s dim-and-dimmer narcissists Derek and Hansel that a sequel—or at least this sequel—feels sad and desperate, like a comic who doesn’t know when to get off stage.
… if Stiller spent half as much time sharpening the film’s jokes as he did rifling through his Rolodex for celebrity cameos (Willie Nelson, Kiefer Sutherland, Susan Boyle?!), he might’ve coughed up a few laughs. As it is, though, Zoolander No. 2 is embarrassing, lazy, and aggressively unfunny.”
The Hollywood Reporter was not fond of the movie either, stating “like a cute little outfit burdened with too many accessories, Zoolander 2 is a victim of overkill .”

Jen Yamato wrote her Zoolander 2 film review for The Daily Beast . She liked Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance as he “channels Tilda Swinton-esque majesty as a gender-fluid art world darling named All.” However, she was not pleased with the rest of the film.
“The script… occasionally hits the right notes before the film death-marches its way through a tiresome succession of espionage movie clichés. Zoolander 2 is already overstuffed with blink-and-you’ll-miss-them cameos by random celebrities like Joe Jonas, Olivia Munn, Ariana Grande, and Trudie Styler.”
Justin Chang, Chief Film Critic for Variety, began his Zoolander 2 movie review with these words.
“It may have been a really, really ridiculously good-looking idea on paper, but Ben Stiller’s attempt to bring back one of his more beloved creations feels like a cheap designer knockoff.”
He went on to say that the movie felt less a film than “an exercise in cross-promotional synergy — an excuse for Stiller and Wilson to don Valentino trenchcoats and sashay their way through Paris Fashion Week, blurring the line between a gag and a photo op.”
Although the critics have been quite harsh on this new film, it will be interesting to watch how it does this weekend. Rabid fans of the cultlike Zoolander may dismiss the official reviews and still go spend their money to see the movie.
As of today, two days before the official release of Zoolander 2 , the tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes reads 23 percent, with 13 reviews and an average rating of 4.5 out of 10. Yet even the scathing reviews have not seemed to dim the excitement of fans of the first Zoolander movie. According to the website, 95 percent of users still want to see the film.
