The latest WWE rumors have been ongoing for months, possibly years now, and suggest a colossal collision at WrestleMania 33 . It would involve John Cena battling The Undertaker in another match for the ages. Recently, the WWE itself teased the idea of the match, suggesting that it’s what fans have wanted for a while now. The fact that it’s even being mentioned can give those fans who want to see it happen some hope.
As WrestleZone reported on Friday, the WWE recently released a Cena video piece featuring talk of five superstars they’d like to see him face. At least three of the superstars mentioned would be brand new opponents for the leader of the Cenation. They include current NXT stars Shinsuke Nakamura and Samoa Joe, the injured Finn Balor, and SmackDown Live Commissioner Shane McMahon. The fifth is the biggest name mentioned, The Undertaker, and it would make for a historic match. However, the two have fought before. Back in Cena’s earlier SmackDown days when he used his freestyle rapper gimmick, he feuded and fought with Taker. They also fought in various tag matches since then, but this would be much bigger.
When it comes down to it, WWE’s main goal for the biggest pay-per-view of the year is always to attract viewers in terms of ticket sales and online viewing. Clearly, a match of this magnitude would headline a WrestleMania event. The 33rd edition of the annual pay-per-view is scheduled to go down in Orlando, Florida, in 2017. There’s already a match on the card involving two giants, as The Big Show is reportedly going to take on NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal. Show has said he plans to retire shortly after that one.
Could it also be a retirement situation for “The Deadman?” That’s what the rumors have been for months. Many believe Undertaker would take on Cena in a match where the stipulation is Taker has to call it quits if he loses. Of course, that would once again upset Cena’s detractors as he’d be technically “burying” a major star to the point of no return. It almost would seem fitting for the two to compete in a “Buried Alive” match but that just seems disrespectful to “The Phenom.”
The other four names on the list make for extremely intriguing matchups. They also seem like strong possibilities to happen, should Shinsuke and Samoa Joe get to the main roster and somehow cross paths with Cena. However, they’d need to move up to the roster within the next few months. Right now, the two are still involved in a feud over the NXT Championship. In addition, Nakamura is working the face angle, so it appears he’d come after Samoa Joe in line to take on Cena. The same probably goes for Finn Balor, a face who will return around or after the Royal Rumble and probably go after a title.
WWE fans have seen that The Undertaker shows up whenever he sees the need to call someone out. He called out big stars such as Shawn Michaels, Triple H, CM Punk, and Brock Lesnar. The biggest name left on his list is John Cena for the “grandest stage of them all.” Undertaker’s retirement match could be very similar to Ric Flair’s final appearance at the event for WWE, when he lost to Shawn Michaels. The WWE could even make Taker their top guy being inducted into the Hall of Fame, which would make it a memorable WrestleMania weekend.
The fact that WWE is teasing this matchup to finish off their new video says quite a bit. They know that many of the fans want it and are planting the seed. With WrestleMania 33 months away, they’ll need to be very safe with Cena. As Rolling Stone mentions, the popular star just made his return to Smackdown Live this past week and was quickly put into a championship match for next month’s pay-per-view. It’s previously been mentioned he wasn’t working as heavy a schedule in terms of wrestling and that would certainly help. Undertaker isn’t working at all right now, so it’s clear WWE is saving him for the biggest possible match they can.
Will the two superstars collide in Orlando for WrestleMania ? Right now the WWE Universe can only wait for those trademark bells to ring and lights to dim with Cena standing in the ring.
