WWE News: Roman Reigns Kept Out Of World Title Match To Help Build New Stars

Published on: September 23, 2016 at 3:16 PM

Roman Reigns has been in the WWE world title scene for two years now. The WWE desperately wanted to get Reigns over as the next big face in the company and the possible heir apparent to John Cena, but the fans were making it hard by booing Roman every time he came out for a match. Now, as the WWE prepares for Clash of Champions this Sunday, Reigns is not in the WWE Universal Championship match, and that is a good thing.

The booking of Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens has been perfect the last two weeks. Yahoo News reported that Triple H and Stephanie McMahon have been running both Raw and SmackDown , and that might explain the rise of new stars instead of relying on only pushing old stars and big men, which is a Vince McMahon trait.

As a result, last week on WWE Monday Night Raw , Kevin Owens pinned Roman Reigns, albeit with interference, to keep Roman out of the WWE Universal Championship match at Clash of Champions . On this week’s edition of Raw , Reigns beat Owens in a steel cage match by escaping, keeping both men strong. This is helping to build Kevin Owens into a legitimate champion.

Now, what the WWE needs to do if they want to continue to build new stars is keep Roman Reigns out of the Kevin Owens vs. Seth Rollins WWE Universal Championship feud and let Roman concentrate on beating Rusev instead at Clash of Champions for the U.S. title.

The same thing is happening over on WWE SmackDown Live . Much like Roman Reigns on Raw , it is John Cena who is in the title picture on SmackDown Live . However, this week on SmackDown Live , Dean Ambrose cleanly pinned John Cena.

411mania reported that the last time that John Cena lost cleanly on regular television, during a non-PPV match, was in 2009. The last few years alone, Cena has been pinned by Kevin Owens, AJ Styles (twice), CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, and now Dean Ambrose. A wrestler like John Cena losing to someone is enough to make a person a legitimate star.

Now, over on WWE Monday Night Raw , both Finn Balor and Kevin Owens have beaten Roman Reigns, and both men ended up as the WWE Universal Champion. This, however, does not mean that Roman Reigns does not deserve to be a champion.

Roman Reigns needs to win the fans back over, and that has to be done by stepping back from the WWE Universal Championship title picture and focusing on reminding everyone that he is a very good in-ring performer. Roman has put on great matches against a variety of stars over the last year, but it is mostly ignored by fans who want to boo the person the WWE wants to push.

There are still WWE fans who want to cheer Roman Reigns, and while many people have suggested that a heel turn would be best for Reigns, there is still a chance to save him and keep him face. The WWE has him against Rusev, an evil heel fans can feel comfortable cheering for Roman against.

However, the best thing the WWE can do right now is to keep Roman Reigns out of the WWE Universal Championship picture so that new stars like Kevin Owens can stand on their own and stick in the upper card title scene, where he can win fans back over to his side. For Roman Reigns, it isn’t too late.
