It is never easy for hardcore and longtime wrestling fans to see their favorites continue to age and get older, but it is inevitable. Unfortunately, as their favorite superstars and wrestlers get older, it leads to a number of problems and one former world champion and WWE Hall of Famer is suffering in a bad way. Harley Race had an accident in his home earlier this week which resulted in him breaking both legs in a fall.
The man who wore a purple robe and a crown to the ring as King Harley Race in the WWF/WWE is bad off right now and dealing with some serious troubles. For a man that had an in-ring career spanning more than three decades, the 74-year-old is no stranger to injuries and pain.
Still, it is never easy to get over one broken bone, but here, he suffered serious breaks in both legs.
The official website of WWE issued a report on Saturday morning detailing Race’s accident which took place on Tuesday at his home in Troy, Missouri.
WWE wishes him the best on his road to recovery and hope for quick healing, but there is not a lot known about his fall.
“Race sustained a fracture to his right femur and suffered breaks in his left fibula and tibia, as well as a spiral break of his left ankle. The WWE Hall of Famer required emergency surgery to relieve the swelling in both legs late Tuesday night. He subsequently received four blood transfusions and underwent surgery on Friday to reset the fractures. “
Having one emergency surgery to help with two broken legs is bad enough, but it is obvious that didn’t fix things and there were additional issues. Friday’s extra surgery and four blood transfusions imply there were some problems and possible extra blood loss during Tuesday’s procedure.
According to Bleacher Report , the seven-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion is known as one of the “toughest competitors” in the history of the wrestling profession. He was a hard hitter and one of those wrestlers who seemed to pull no punches and he was brutal in the ring.
Those who never had the honor of seeing him wrestle may see him today and think a guy like him couldn’t do much in the ring, but they’d be wrong. Race is a huge reason that wrestling is what it is today and true fans will never forget what he has done for the sport.
Harley Race spent more than 20 years in the American Wrestling Association (AWA) while also dominating the NWA throughout the ’70s and into the ’80s. He joined the WWF/WWE for a few years in the late ’80s where he served as the second King of the Ring in the company’s history.
During his time in WWF, Race was managed by Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and was known as “Handsome” Harley Race upon first signing. After winning the King of the Ring, King Harley Race would make his opponents bow and kneel to him after winning his matches.
Race defeated the Junkyard Dog at WrestleMania III which resulted in JYD having to bow and kneel to the king. From there, Race feuded with Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Hulk Hogan , and his feud with the latter led to a hernia injury that ultimately led him leaving the WWF.
Harley Race had a career that any and every single wrestler in the world can be jealous of as they could only wish to accomplish half of the things he has done. His feuds with Dusty Rhodes and Ric Flair are legendary while his numerous title wins and tenures through multiple promotions are hard to compete against. After breaking both of his legs, fans can only wish him the best and hope WWE Hall of Famer King Harley Race recovers quickly.
