The Brock Lesnar VS. John Cena WWE match set for SummerSlam 2014 will be for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Assuming Lesnar wins, does that mean the WWE title may become practically unavailable until WrestleMania 31 or some other major PPV event?
In a related report by The Inquisitr , Dave Batista blasted Brock Lesnar for being a part timer, especially how he ended Undertaker’s streak only to disappear shortly thereafter. The complaint does have some sting to it, considering Lesnar has only had 125 WWE matches in his entire career , with 33 of them PPV events.
Cena even latched onto that topic during RAW when he questioned whether Lesnar has a true passion for the business. Lesnar’s shirt may have said “Eat, Sleep, Break the Streak,” but Cena says he’s the only one actually living it for real in the WWE.
Because of this history, it has to make some fans wonder what will happen if Lesnar beats Cena and takes the championship belt. So far, Brock Lesnar’s WWE schedule list in 2014 only includes two confirmed showings for Monday Night RAW, one on August 18, the day after SummerSlam, and another on September 15, which is a week before Night of Champions.
We don’t know if he’ll actually be wrestling at any of those PPV events, never mind Hell in a Cell, Survivor Series or TLC 2014. Otherwise, we’re looking at waiting until next Royal Rumble 2015 or WrestleMania 31, which seems like a long time for the belt to be unavailable to any would-be challengers.
Then again, if you look at the history of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, it could be argued that perhaps it’s time for a WWE superstar to hold onto the belt for more than several months. Before the two major titles were merged by Randy Orton in 2011, the title was being swapped around like hot cakes, with the belt changing hands eight times in one year.
Last year wasn’t quite as bad, with only six champions listed. So, if Brock Lesnar becomes the new champion, he would be number three in 2014, and it would also be his first time to hold the belt since 2004, when he lost to Eddie Guerrero.
But if John Cena VS Brock Lesnar does result in the latter’s win, it could be argued the situation could be compared against Dwayne Johnson. The Rock took the title in January of 2013, only to lose it to John Cena at WrestleMania 29.
If you look at The Rock’s WWE match history , it’s obvious he has been a part-timer just like Lesnar, although Johnson didn’t receive nearly as much flack for it. Still, if Lesnar does hold the title until WrestleMania 31, that would be almost eight months, which is quite a bit of time to have a champion stay in the shadows.
You would hope WWE creative would do some sort of build up… maybe they could have Undertaker take his revenge by burying Lesnar in a grave with the championship belt, so no one can win it back? That way, Taker retires with the belt and the WWE is forced to re-invent the titles or just separate them back out again.
