A South Carolina woman allegedly stabbed her husband with a ceramic squirrel after he came home empty handed from a beer run.
The incident occurred late on Christmas Eve when the package stores had already closed for the holiday.
According to Charleston County Sheriff’s deputies, when the woman’s spouse returned to the residence with no brew, she was so upset that she allegedly grabbed a decorative ceramic squirrel and used it to hit him on the head and then stab him in the chest.
Her husband, 41, called 911 from a neighbor’s home at around midnight (i.e., early Christmas morning) where he had fled, and responding officers found him covered in blood, with a big gash in his chest. He received treatment at a local hospital, but fortunately the man’s injuries were not of a life-threatening nature.
The suspect, identified in multiple media accounts as Helen Ann Williams, 44, initially claimed that her spouse fell and cut himself , “but couldn’t explain why her hands and clothes were also bloody.” Apparently, she subsequently admitted that she had sent him to the package store for beer.
Officers arrested the woman on charged of criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature with a $10,000 bond. She is due back in court in April to answer to the felony charge.
Some media accounts identify the victim in this ceramic squirrel attack as a “common-law” spouse. In case you might be wondering, in general a common-law marriage means there was no marriage license or ceremony, but the couple in a long-term relationship hold themselves out as married. South Carolina is one of the few states in the US that still recognizes common-law marriage.
There may or may not be something in the water (or the beer) in South Carolina lately. In another reported Christmas attack, a bride-to-be allegedly stabbed the groom when they reportedly disagreed over the color scheme for their upcoming wedding. The man was treated at a local hospital for the wound and released.
