Let this be a message to kids everywhere who don’t want to bother going to school: A 103-year-old woman has just gotten her diploma – a missed milestone that she’s regretted for almost a century.
Marie Hunt, 103, of Wisconsin, never earned her diploma not because she didn’t have the desire to. Unfortunately, when she was in eighth grade, she had no way to get to school, the woman told WKOW .
“I was born in 1911, and there was no way that country kids six miles away could go to high school.”
Instead, the woman had to drop out to take care of her younger brothers and sisters; Hunt is one of 11 kids. If she had stayed in school, the 103-year-old would’ve graduated in 1928, the Associated Press added.
Friends, family and Marie’s hospice nurse helped arrange the woman’s diploma after she expressed regret that she never finished high school. All it took was a little cooperation with River Valley High in Spring Green to make her elusive life-long dream a reality, People reported.
Though she didn’t get to walk down the aisle with other graduates, Marie did get a special ceremony to commemorate her achievement, Fox2Now added.
With the help of a walker, the woman proudly walked down the hall at her assisted living facility to the tune of “Pomp and Circumstance” like a proper graduate. Her fellow residents were there to cheer her on.
Now that she has her diploma, college could be next for 103-year-old – in fact, three of her siblings went on to higher education. But for now, Marie is simply happy to have finally achieved her life-long dream.
“It’s something I always wanted to do. And I didn’t have the opportunity to go and now 100 years later, here I am!”
