Vince Young has reportedly signed with the Green Bay Packers on a one-year contract. The report adds that Young is expected to compete for a backup job behind Aaron Rodgers.
Young was the third overall pick during the 2006 NFL Draft, but last played in the league with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011. The report comes just hours after Young appeared at the Packers’ training camp for a workout.
ESPN first reported the news of Young’s return to the NFL, citing an unnamed source . The source added that Vince Young is apparently excited about the new opportunity and was “hoping to participate in the team’s quarterback meeting” on Monday.
While the reported news gets Young’s foot back in the door for the NFL, it isn’t likely he will see much action in a regular-season game. Current Packers QB Rodgers has missed just two starts since earning the starting position in 2008.
But while he may not earn a start in an NFL game, SI notes that Young could very well earn the backup position. During his prime, the 2005 Heisman Trophy runner-up was considered a rising star in the league. And his experience could lend a hand toward him being picked in the event Rodgers can’t play.
While Young is certainly not in his prime anymore, he reportedly impressed the Packers on Monday and impressed several other teams during the University of Texas’ Pro Day in March.
Following his performance earlier this year, Vince Young was linked to several possible teams, including Oakland and Seattle. But since then, there has been no hint that the former quarterback would play in the NFL again.
Should the rumors prove true Young will compete with 2012 seventh-round pick B.J. Coleman and last year’s backup Graham Harrell for a spot behind Aaron Rodgers.
Do you think the Packers have really signed Vince Young?
