Ludington, MI – A man with a turkey baster came to the rescue of a baby who had stopped breathing.
Five-month-old Nessa Shoup was under the care of two babysitters when she suddenly quit breathing. One of them quickly placed a call to 911 for help.
Bill Hogenson happened to be working nearby when the baby stopped breathing. When he overheard the babysitter on the phone with authorities, he rushed into the house to lend a helping hand.
“We heard one of the babysitters talking on the phone to 911 saying that the baby is purple and not breathing. At first I was in disbelief that did I just hear that. So I started jogging towards her,” Hogenson explained.
When CPR failed to get the baby breathing again, Hogenson resorted to drastic measures. He quickly retrieved a turkey baster from the kitchen and used it to rescue the baby.
“So I went to the drawer and found a turkey baster and used the turkey baster to clear her nasal passage and her airway. Patted her on the back some more, then spun her around and got a good look at her. And she quit crying and she smiled at me. And I knew that we were going to be in the good,” he explained.
Shawn and Robin Gasciogne, the five-month-old baby’s parents, are eternally grateful Bill Hogenson happened to be working nearby when their child quit breathing. The Gasciognes believe it was fate that brought the man to their neighborhood that day.
“If it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t have this beautiful baby here now, and we are forever grateful,” Shawn explained.
Hogenson credits his instincts as a parent for rescuing the baby. He said the urge to save the child simply “kicked in” when he discovered she was in serious trouble. He said the smile the five-month-old gives him “bonds them for life.”
