The Tokyo Ghoul Season 3 release date has yet to be officially confirmed for an exact time frame, but the President of FUNimation Entertainment has indicated that 2016 seems likely. Fans of both the manga and the anime are a little concerned about the direction the anime’s story is going, so could Studio Pierrot give in to demands for a Tokyo Ghoul reboot?
In a related report by the Inquisitr , the release of The Seven Deadly Sins Season 2 has officially been confirmed for 2016, but the second story arc for the manga is only about half way finished, making it possible that the Nanatsu no Taizai anime may diverge from the source material.
Unfortunately, this type of divergence is what is so upsetting to the manga fans. The original story and plot comes from Sui Ishida, who published Chapter 59 of Tokyo Ghoul: re shortly before Christmas, 2015. The plot for the first two seasons of the anime was based upon scripts written by Chuji Mikasano at Studio Pierrot, but the final 143rd chapter of the manga was released in the same month as the ending of Season 1. Based upon the fact that so much source material was available during production, fans were surprised that the anime story started diverging so noticeably.
In addition, the original draft for Tokyo Ghoul Root A was also leaked onto Reddit, and fans noticed Studio Pierrot apparently chose to go another direction. When interpreting the draft notes, some fans even claim Ishida wanted the anime to end with Kaneki and Hide dying together in flames. While the anime did have a scene depicting them both in a fire, obviously, it did not end as originally planned.
Based upon this history, some fans are already despairing over the fate of Tokyo Ghoul Season 3, with some suggesting that a reboot or remake is necessary at this point.
“I’m personally hoping for a reboot for the entire anime. At this point, with how much plot and character critical stuff got cut even in the first season, a third season will be an utter trainwreck,” wrote Chilopoda on the Tokyo Ghoul Wikia . “If Pierrot really wanted to make a season 3, they would have done it already. With how Root A went, there’s literally no way they can even remotely follow :re faithfully.”
While some may desire a Tokyo Ghoul reboot, there has been no indication at all that the anime producers will go in this direction. The fall 2015 release of the Tokyo Ghoul: Jack OVA did fill in some story gaps, and the recently released Tokyo Ghoul: Pinto was based upon the Hibi novel, but nothing indicates that the Tokyo Ghoul: Re anime will restart the story.
If anything, it seems more likely the third season will simply follow the very basic plot details of :re and introduce Haise Sasaki and a group of CCG investigators who have been surgically altered to be half-ghouls capable of using ghoul weapons. From there, the story could go anywhere, although if you want some major spoilers, our previous article covers the manga story with more details.
Tokyo Ghoul Season 3 Release Date Rumors And Facts
The Tokyo Ghoul rumors have gotten pretty wild lately. Unfortunately, some of this confusion is due to news sites repeating information from Anime Maru , which claims that “the series will air during the Winter 2016 anime season, and Madhouse will be taking over the animation from Studio Pierrot.” While some fans would probably be happy if this Tokyo Ghoul news was true, Anime Maru point blank admits that the website is “a satirical publication. Nothing on this site should be interpreted as factual nor as a claim to fact… In conclusion, Anime Maru is fake anime news.”
In actual news, Studio Pierrot has been silent on their plans for the Tokyo Ghoul release date. On the other hand, CEO and President of FUNimation Entertainment Gen Fukunaga indicated that discussions were under way for a target release of 2016.
“Ever since we began simulcasting the anime series last year, fans of Tokyo Ghoul have been clamoring for a mobile game,” said Fukunaga in a press release. “With Season 2 now finished and Season 3 set for 2016, the anticipation for the game has only grown higher.”
FUNimation also confirmed with news outlets that they were “anticipating a 2016 release,” but nothing official has been announced in regards to an exact date.
