British actor Tom Holland is the third actor to play Spider-Man on the silver screen. Tobey Maguire was the first Spider-man in the original trilogy. Fellow Brit Andrew Garfield played Spider-man in the reboot films The Amazing Spider-man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014).
Garfield was happy to play Spider-Man, but unfortunately, when Marvel Studios bought back the movie rights from Sony Pictures, it was decided that Marvel would cast a brand new actor for their own films. according to Cinema Blend .
Holland was cast as the new Peter Parker/Spider-Man for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2015. The soon-to-be 20-year-old actor is best known for his starring role as Billy Elliot in the 2005 London’s West End musical Billy Elliot the Musical .
Tom Holland will have his own Marvel film when Spider-man: Homecoming releases next year. Robert Downey, Jr. will reprise his Tony Stark role, and Marissa Tomei signed on to play Aunt May Parker.
While Tobey Maguire was happy to play Spider-man in the first trilogy, there was a time when director Sam Raimi wanted to replace him before the first sequel. The 2001 film Spider-Man grossed over $400 million, and Maguire wanted to have a bigger paycheck, and tried a tactic that almost got him fired.
When Raimi asked Maguire to report to production to get started on special effects, Maguire refused, stating that under doctor’s orders, he was supposed to rest his injured back that he got while filming Seabiscuit . That action almost got Maguire fired from the series since he was breaching his contract, and actor Jake Gyllenhaal was considered to be cast as the new Spider-Man.
Fortunately for Maguire, everything worked out between him and the film executives, and he was able to continue playing Spider-Man for the rest of the first series.
Maguire also gave his blessing to Garfield, when the series got a movie reboot. While Maguire wasn’t approach to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the 2012 film, he was happy over the selection and told Garfield he approved.
I was certainly curious as to who was going to play Peter Parker. When I heard it was you, I was literally like, ‘F*****g perfect!”
Tobey Maguire has been laying low when it comes to making movies. He last starred as Bobby Fisher in Pawn Sacrifice in 2014. Charlize Theron made headlines that featured Maguire when she stated in an interview that she and Maguire didn’t get along while making The Cider House Rules . These days, Maguire spends his time playing professional poker and even participates in the World Series of Poker.
