Times Preparing New User-Driven Interface

The New York Times is moving toward a reader-programmed version of its paper online.

NYT Chief Technology Officer Mark Frons tells MediaBistro he’s developing an API for the site that’ll reinvent its entire data structure.

“Everything we produce should be organized data,” he said.

Frons describes a site on which users can mash-up data to their own likings. He also says the NYT will make the code openly available for programmers to put their own twist on the content.

The API is expected to be done within the next several weeks with pieces launching in the coming six months.
