The Walking Dead spinoff might actually take place during the same time period as the original show, so perhaps fans will get see a crossover somewhere down the road.
According to Entertainment Weekly , Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman recently spilled a few more details about the highly-anticipated companion series . By now, most hardcore fans know that it will start out at the beginning of the zombie virus outbreak. However, while talking about the new series at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas, Kirkman made it sound like there will be a flash-forward that will catch the spinoff up to the original series.
“The timeline is taking place a little bit earlier than the original show… We’re going to possibly see that unfold a little more in the other show. But I wouldn’t call it ‘prequel’ because the entirety of the show is not going take place before [‘The Walking Dead’]. It will eventually form a path running concurrently.”
The untitled spinoff series will be set in Los Angeles, so perhaps one day Daryl Dixon and his angel-wing vest will head to the City of Angels to hang with the new group of survivors. However, Robert Kirkman isn’t planning on a huge crossover in the near future — he wants the two shows to stand alone, and it makes sense to keep them separate for now. The Walking Dead spinoff has already been picked up for two seasons by AMC, but this doesn’t mean that it will last beyond that. Viewers might actually tune out if they start suffering from zombie kill overkill.
During a SXSW dinner hosted by the Daily Beast , Walking Dead executive producer David Alpert revealed just how little the new series will reference its parent during its first season.
“There’s going to be six seconds that reference the mother show. Six seconds. Other than that, the show will be an entirely stand-alone thing… there will only be a few Easter eggs — and those six seconds.”
Alpert also said that some of the companion series characters will be “really f***ed up,” so they might start out with more non-zombie-related issues that Rick Grimes’ group did. As the Inquisitr previously reported, the new group will be “plagued by problems including divorce, drugs, self-harm, and illness.” The cast includes Cliff Curtis as a divorced schoolteacher named Sean Cabrera and Kim Dickens as his love interest, a guidance counselor named Nancy. Both characters have troubled teen-aged children to look out for. The Inquisitr previously posted detailed descriptions of the kids , and it looks like they’re going to cause more problems for their parents than Carl ever did.
The six-episode Walking Dead companion series will begin airing late this summer on AMC. Are you looking forward to it, or does watching zombies year-round seem like a depressing and tedious task that you aren’t interested in undertaking?
