Anyone who has played Gears of War or Mass Effects will probably recognize the name Unreal Game Engine as that is the powerhouse gaming engine that powers two of gaming’s biggest titles, and it seems that it will be now powering software to be used by FBI trainees.
In a deal with Virtual Heroes, a Raleigh, North Carolina, based interactive learning simulation company, the Unreal engine, though the just launched Unreal Government Network (UGN) initiative from Epic, will used by various agencies and units of the United States and allied governments.
There are already several projects underway that fall under the UGN with the FBI Academy using the Unreal Engine 3 to create a multiplayer crime scene simulator for its cadets.
As well a “top-five defense contractor” and a “national laboratory” will be using the technology for custom-made integrations and visualization.
Add to that growing list the HumanSim platform is in development and is aimed at medical education training as is a new platform being developed by VirtualHeroes and Duke University for anesthesiology training for Army physicians.
This of course is really just a natural expansion of the work that VirtualHeroes has done for the Army as they were the company behind the popular video game America’s Army, which also uses the Unreal engine.
