The trailer for co-writer and director Ed Gass-Donnelly’s The Last Exorcism Part II had debuted online.
The film is a sequel to the 2010 horror flick The Last Exorcism , which was crafted by A Necessary Death director Daniel Stamm. Although the first entry in the series was a “found footage” movie, the sequel seems to be approaching the story as a more traditional narrative.
Produced by Eli Roth, the follow-up continues the story laid out in the first film. Actress Ashley Bell reprises her role as Nell Sweetzer, the woman who battled the demonic forces that were attempting to take control of her body. Although she was exorcised in the first flick, apparently there’s still a piece of evil living inside her.
Cinema Blend provides the following synopsis:
“Directed by Ed Gass-Donnelly, ‘The Last Exorcism Part II’ picks up with Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell), who had been possessed by a demon in the last movie, being discovered terrified and alone in the woods of Louisiana. Brought back to civilization she tries to restart her life, but discovers that the spirit that once inhabited her isn’t quite done yet.”
Although the first film wasn’t exactly a critic success, that didn’t stop the film from making an impressive amount of money during its theatrical run.
According to Box Office Mojo , Daniel Stamm’s The Last Exorcism made around $41 million at the box office. Worldwide, the movie managed to pull in roughly $67 million. On a budget of around $1.8 million, those numbers aren’t bad at all.
Since the formula worked for the folks at Lionsgate in the past, chances are The Last Exorcism Part II will sport a small budget as well. You can check out the trailer for the film below.
The Last Exorcism Part II , which also stars Spencer Treat Clark and Andrew Sensenig, opens in US theaters on March 1.
