After a year of rumors the iPad 3 is finally here. Apple unveiled the latest generation of its tablet, the iPad HD, today during an event in California.

The new tablet looks pretty similar to the iPad 2 but Apple says that the display is incredible and gives a better picture than your HDTV. Phil Schiller, the senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said that the iPad will feature retina display.

Schiller said :

“First, the new iPad will have retina display. And trust me, you won’t be able to appreciate it until you see it…. Many of you all have an HDTV at home. These televisions, 50 inches, 60 inches, have a resolution of 1920 by 1080, Here’s the new iPad, it has more pixels. That’s incredible…”

The other big change for the iPad HD is that it will have 4G connectivity with both AT&T and Verizon.

The new iPad will be available on March 16th in the United States.

iPad 3 price:

  • $499 for 16GB, $629 with 4G
  • $599 for 32GB, $729 with 4G
  • $699 for 64GB, $829 with 4G

Schiller said that the new iPad will be able to run for 10 hours. With 4G running it will last for at least 9 hours. The new device also features an A5X processor with quad-core graphics.

Yahoo reports that Apple currently dominates the tablet market. As of last September Apple had 73% of all tablet sales. But with Amazon’s new Kindle and a touchscreen version of Windows heading toward the market, Apple could see its share of the market slowly slip away.

Do you think the new iPad will allow Apple to maintain dominance over the tablet market?

Here’s a video about the new iPad from the Associated Press.
