Just when you thought the return of television’s new winter season could not get any better, CBS teased spoilers of a Good Wife series spinoff, The Good Fight . Leading the new show is acting legend Christine Baranski, who played the fierce and fearless star attorney, Diane Lockhart, on The Good Wife . Variety reports that The Good Fight will focus on Lockhart navigating the business climate that has formed after President-elect Donald Trump lands in power.

At the close of The Good Wife series, many may recall Baranski’s character was taking strides to transform her firm into a female-owned business positioned to dominate the justice market. But, a betrayal by the series’ leading lady, Alicia Florrick, played by Julianna Margulies, put a damper on her plans, and caused their longstanding off and on friendship to end with a loud slap.
While it will be a spinoff, fans should not expect a continuation of the same old Good Wife story.
The new series picks up one year after The Good Wife finale. The powerful showrunner duo of Robert and Michelle King will remain on the bill, as well as Ridley Scott and a few other big names from the series. CBS confirms Baranski will continue as Diane Lockhart, Cush Jumbo will reprise her role as Lucca Quinn, and Sarah Steele will play Marissa Gold. New faces that viewers will be happy to see are Rose Leslie, Delroy Lindo, Paul Guilfoyle, Bernadette Peters, and Erica Tazel.

Kicking off The Good Fight is a financial scam, CBS reports. Maia, played by Rose Leslie, has tarnished her reputation as an up-and-coming lawyer, all while wasting away the savings of her mentor, Diane Lockhart. Amidst the drama, Diane and Maia are removed from Lockhart/Lee, which you may recall, was a long time desire of the arrogant and money hungry Good Wife attorney, David Lee. The two ladies join Florrick’s former partner and friend, Lucca Quinn, and that’s just where the fun gets started. Of course no King series would be complete without an adversary — Diane is rumored to have beef with a rival attorney.
“With Trump and the cultural shifts we’re seeing we’re really excited — there’s a strong rationale for the show,” Robert King confirmed at a Q&A in New York for the Scripted television conference.

Although taking The Good Wife’s coveted time slot, the show will stream exclusively on CBS All Access. Taking a cue from the likes of Netflix and Hulu, the streaming service provided by CBS offers viewers the monthly stand alone service with limited, or no commercial ads. Marc DeBevoise, President and Chief Operating Officer of CBS Interactive, gave Deadline insight as to why the show will be a new addition to the growing streaming service.
“CBS All Access has built tremendous momentum in the past year – passing 1 million subscribers, launching our first original with Big Brother: Over The Top and, most recently, bringing live NFL On CBS programming to the service. We’re continuing this momentum with the upcoming launch of The Good Fight which promises to not only deliver more ambitious premium programming for our subscribers but an opportunity for world-class creators like Robert and Michelle King to push the envelope in new ways.”
Talk of the new series does offer a light at the end of the tunnel for The Good Wife fans. Viewers were left hanging and wondering whether Alicia resolved her issues and continued her relationship with Jason Crouse, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. In the Variety report, Robert and Michelle King answered the big question with a “yes.”
You can catch The Good Fight premiere on Sunday, Feb. 19, on CBS All Access. CBS will also air a special preview broadcast of The Good Wife spinoff in its old time slot.
