The DreamWorks animated comedy The Croods and the Gerard Butler action flick Olympus Has Fallen lead the Friday box office.
The Croods proved to be a big draw for families on Friday. The animated film managed to bring in around $11.6 million during its first day of release. Estimates put the movie’s three-day total at approximately $42 million.
Directed by Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders, the film follows the adventures of a prehistoric family as they embark on an action-packed road trip. Nicolas Cage , Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds lend their voices to the comedy.
The DreamsWork production has received mostly mixed reviews from critics. Although the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score is presently perched at 65 percent, the film has seemingly struck a chord with moviegoers.
Veteran action director Antoine Fuqua’s R-rated thriller Olympus Has Fallen proved popular with adult audiences. The film collected a tidy $10 million from 3,098 theaters on Friday. In addition to Gerard Butler, the flick stars Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart, Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett, Melissa Leo, and Cole Hauser.
The $70 million dollar action movie is expected to make around $28 million over the weekend . The film was produced by Millenium Films.
The Tina Fey and Paul Rudd comedy Admission failed to connect with audiences on Friday. The movie only managed to bring in around $2 million from 2,160 theaters. Reports indicate that the film will make $6 million during opening weekend. This is rumored to be towards the end of studio expectations.
Director Harmony Korine’s controversial crime drama Spring Breakers expanded into 1,104 theaters this weekend. The film posted an impressive $1.9 million at the box office on Friday. Analysts believe the movie could rake in around $5 million when all is said and done.
Last weekend’s number one movie The Call dropped around 57 percent from the business it generated a week ago. The Halle Berry thriller earned approximately $2.7 million on Friday. The modestly-budgeted $15 million thriller is expected to add an additional $9 million to its domestic total this weekend.
