Kim Kardashian and Chelsea Handler are just doing what each one does best — one is showing her famous backside, and the other has made the famous butt the butt of a joke.
By now, almost everyone has seen the recently released photograph of Kim Kardashian , showing off her shiny (literally, because it is liberally oiled) behind in Kim’s attempt to “break the internet.”
The photo has drawn the eye — and the criticism — of many. Kim is almost completely nude, appearing to rise out of a slinky black dress, her hair caught up in a topknot and her neck wreathed with pearls. She looks back over her shoulder but, of course, the piece of anatomy that is taking front and center of both the photograph and most viewers’ attention is her behind, which appears rather enhanced, even by Kardashian standards.
Furthermore, many are taking issue with the narrow span of Kim’s waist , which appears tiny and has many crying “Photoshop!”
Chelsea Handler seems to fall into the “Photoshop” category. Pulling down her underwear, Handler took a picture of her own bare behind in her bathroom mirror. She then created a photo collage of her own pic next to that of her former E! colleague’s photo, posted it on Instagram , and wrote, “Can you believe more than 2 a** can fit on the same screen? Guess which one’s real. Your move, instagram.”
If it seems as if Handler is taking issue with Instagram as well as Kardashian, that’s because she is calling out Instagram’s seemingly random nudity policy. Last month, she posted a topless picture of herself riding on a horse, mocking a similar picture of Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Handler captioned the photo, “Anything a man can do, a woman has the right to do better. #kremlin.”
When Instagram removed the picture of Handler, she posted, “Taking this down is sexist. I have every right to show I have a better body than Putin.” She re-posted the picture, but Instagram removed it again.
Instagram did not take down Kim Kardashian’s photo, despite the nudity.
After posting the collage of her behind next to Kim’s, Handler asked for clarification. “Just so I’m clear, Instagram… it’s ok to use nudity to sexualize yourself on your site, but not to make a joke?” she wrote. “I’m just so confused.”
Russell Brand seems to have summed up the situation regarding Kim’s behind perfectly on his web series The Trews.
“I got a text message from a person saying, ‘Have you seen Kim Kardashian’s ass?’ and I thought, ‘Well, yes, more than I’ve seen my own ass,” Brand said. “I’ve only seen my own ass a few times in the mirror … Kim Kardashian’s one I’ve seen quite a lot of. I know it as well as I know my mother’s face.”
