As fans recall, the Season 4 finale of The 100 revealed that Clarke (Eliza Taylor) survived the second apocalypse due to having Nightblood in her system. A few of her friends went up into space and could return to Earth after five years. However, the end of the episode showed that it had been more than six years, and they still have not landed. Viewers learned that Clarke met a young Nightblood who she was taking care of. The conclusion also featured a prison ship coming down to Earth, which has everyone talking.
According to The CW network, The 100 Season 5 will focus on the characters examining their responsibilities in regard to the planet. It teases that they have an important choice to make in the five years after the apocalypse . They can celebrate what they have left and rebuild. Or they can allow the frailties of human nature to destroy their only chance to rise once again.
Following the season finale, executive producer Jason Rothenberg spoke to several news outlets about what is coming next. He explained to IGN that the prisoner ship isn’t something totally new, even though fans have not met the characters yet. In previous episodes, there were Easter eggs hinting of space mining missions and prisoners that vanished. He hinted that the Easter eggs can be found in an early episode as well as another one in the middle of last season. For those that want to go back and search for clues, Rothenberg would only say that the signs were in the background of certain scenes.
As for Clarke and Madie in The 100 , Season 5 will explain how the characters met and the extent of their relationship. Even though the Nightblood child is not Clarke’s daughter, they do have a maternal relationship. Following Praimfaya, Clarke and Madie were just wandering the Earth. One day, they found each other in a green valley, which somehow survived the end of the world, and have been together ever since.
They have a bond, which will create some tension when the show returns. When Clarke reunites with her friends, she will face decisions that will not benefit both Madi and the Sky Crew. This will create anxiety for Clarke and brings up the question of who will she side with in the end? Continue protecting Madi, who is just a child and totally dependant on her? Or will she choose her friends, who have been with her since the beginning?
As for Bellamy Blake (Bob Morley), fans are wondering if he ends up bonding with Echo (Tasya Teles). On more than one occasion, Echo betrayed Bellamy and the rest of the group. However, he still allowed her to go in the rocket, saving her life. The 100 Season 5 spoilers from TV Guide confirm that she was promoted to a series regular. So, will Bellamy and Echo have a romance? Or will they just be apocalyptic survival partners? Will Echo’s time up in space and with the Sky Crew change her for the better?
Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos) was in the bunker during the season finale. Even though she doubts her capabilities as a leader, Indra (Adina Porter) promised to help her lead the survivors. Rothenberg explained that when Clarke, Bellamy, and Octavia meet again, they all will have gone through huge changes. For six years, Octavia has been leading her people. Rothenberg teased that when Bellamy and Octavia reunite, he will find that his sister has been forced to lead in a way that he will not approve of.
The 100 Season 5 spoilers also reveal that when the show returns, fans will see Octavia in a “WTF” moment. No details were given away, so viewers will just have to speculate on what that means.
