According to police, a physician is dead, killed by her husband, who then turned the gun on himself , reports WFAA News. The murder-suicide occurred in a quiet gated community located in northern San Antonio, Texas. WFAA reports that the neighborhood is in shock following the tragic incident.

KMSS News reports that police received a call early Friday morning from a woman hiding inside a closet at the Rogers Ranch home. Dr. Ross’ two children were not in the residence at the time the shooting took place. Police now surmise that Dr. Casey Mitchell Ross was shot in the head by her husband, David Thomas Ross, a Dallas-area businessman, according to the report.

Dr. Ross, 43, a Shreveport, Louisiana, native, an anesthesiologist, and a mother-of-two, was rushed to University Hospital where she later died, according to KMSS News.

WFAA reports that police searched the home where the shooting took place for about four hours after finding David Thomas Ross, 46, dead in a hallway. He worked for Tolleson Wealth Management as a Philanthropy Consultant, according to information obtained by WFAA.

Tolleson Wealth Management released a statement on the matter.

“We have been stunned to learn of the tragic deaths of David and Casey Ross… The entire firm wishes to express our profound sorrow and deepest sympathy to the families and all others that may be impacted.”

KMSS reports that neighbors indicate that Dr. Ross lived in the home with her two children prior to wedding David Thomas Ross, her second marriage. WFAA notes the physician’s children, ages 7 and 10, were at school on Friday when the shooting took place, which was the last day prior to their spring vacation.

Dr. Ross graduated from Loyola Prep in 1991, after attending Stephen F. Austin University, reports KMSS. She then went on to attend medical school at San Antonio’s University of Texas Health Sciences Center.

Not only did she work as an anesthesiologist, Dr. Ross also worked as a contractor in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit in the South Texas Veterans Health Care System , according to information garnered by KIIITV. The news media outlet also notes Dr. Ross was a part time professor at the University of Texas School of Medicine.

Law enforcement is still investigating why David Thomas Ross may have shot his wife.

According to KMSS, domestic violence may have been involved in the incident and reports that “Domestic violence advocates say in many situations, when someone being abused makes an attempt to leave or mentions leaving, things can quickly turn tragic.”

In a 2015 report, the Violence Policy Center notes that in the United States alone, there were approximately 1,000 to 1,500 deaths due to murder-suicide . In addition, most of these, or 93 percent, involved some sort of firearm. This report also states that most murderers – 90 percent – in murder-suicides that involve couples are male. The Violence Policy Center also indicates that the most common type of murder-suicide is between two intimate partners, with the male typically murdering his wife or girlfriend.

According to WFAA, a GoFundMe page has been created for Dr. Ross’ memorial fund . At press, over $55,000 had been raised to assist the slain physician’s mother and the biological father of her two children, the website notes.

A funeral will be held for Dr. Ross on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Porter Lauring Mortuary in San Antonio, while visitation will take place at the funeral home on Monday evening between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., reports KMSS. The news media outlet also indicates that a memorial service will be held for Dr. Ross at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, at the Ellerbe Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. before the service takes place.
