Robin Roberts almost died during her treatment for myelodysplastic syndrome. Roberts was diagnosed with the rare blood after undergoing radiation and chemotherapy for breast cancer years before. The disorder is thought to have been caused by her breast cancer treatment.
According to Entertainment Tonight , the Good Morning America co-anchor recently opened up about her treatment and one particular night that she thought she was going to die.
It happened after she received a bone marrow transplant back in 2013.
“One night post-transplant I was convinced I was slipping away. And then I heard a voice saying my name over and over again. There was a nurse named Jenny, pleading with me not to slip away. I don’t know what would have happened if she wasn’t there.”
Robin Roberts felt as though she almost died, which isn’t uncommon for patients that undergo such serious procedures. And then, of course, there are the times where patients feel as though they want to die — as if death would end their suffering. Roberts says that she went through a period of this as well.
“My throat felt like I had swallowed a blow torch — I couldn’t swallow,” Roberts said back in 2014. She said that she wanted to die because she was “in so much pain.”
According to Design & Trend , Roberts is thankful for those who give her strength and courage to pull through.
“There has not been one single day where someone hasn’t come up to me and said, ‘I’ve prayed for you.’ Not one day. My shoulders almost go down when people say you’re so courageous, because they gave me the strength to want to fight.”
Robin Roberts, 54, hasn’t had an easy road when it comes to her health. As previously reported by the Inquisitr , Roberts has been doing better following her bone marrow transplant. While she still takes things one step at a time, she is thankful to her doctors for the care that she has received, and she’s looking forward to a bright future.
In her book Everbody’s Got Something , Roberts talks about her struggles and how her illnesses have given her a new perspective on life. She was determined to make something good out of all the bad and hopes to help others who might be going through something similar.
Roberts says that her mom was her inspiration for the book.
“My momma would say, ‘Honey, everybody’s got something.’ Everybody’s got something, not just a challenge, but something to give to help you get through that challenge.”
