The Supreme Court has made a ground-breaking ruling that crushes a 1996 federal law that denied benefits to same-sex couples. In celebration for gay marriage supporters across the nation, Melissa Etheridge announced her engagement to partner Linda Wallem.
She made the announcement through a phone interview with CNN’s Ashleigh Banfield , in which she also gave her own thoughts on the dismantling of California’s Proposition 8.
“It is about family and I love my four kids,” Etheridge said in the interview. “I called my now fiancée. I’m looking forward to marrying my partner of three years we’ve been together. I’m going to get married in the state of California. I woke [the kids] up this morning telling them the Supreme Court ruling on DOMA. …I love everybody out there. It’s a great day.”
Hundreds of thousands of gay-marriage supporters are taking to the streets across the United States to celebrate the history-making ruling. Melissa Etheridge is also very proud of the Supreme Court’s decision and she expressed her joy for all Americans.
“Love is love and America is beautiful. It’s a wonderful day…for America, for all its citizens, for our amazing constitution,” the singer added. “And just God bless America and the forefathers that put this sort of document in place that could withstand this sort of questioning and sort of putting to test our diversity in America and our civil rights. It’s just an amazing, amazing day. I’m proud to be an American.”
Her partner Linda Wallem has also found herself in the spotlight over the years working as an actress, writer, and producer. Wallem spent time as a writer for the sitcoms Cybill and That ’70s Show .
Outside of her work as a writer, Wallem also appeared in two major works as a waitress. She played the minor role in Sleepless In Seattle and was a waitress once again during an episode of Seinfeld in 1994.
