Superman Comic’s Appointment Of Anti-Gay Writer Faces Further Backlash

The controversy over Orson Scott Card’s appointment as the next writer for the Superman comics has continued to develop, with major companies that planned to work with the author in 2013 asking him to explain his comments.

Scott Card was announced on February 6 as the next writer for a story in the digital-first Adventures of Superman anthology.

However, this caused Superman fans to protest as he had previously made a series of anti-gay comments, which included the following about legalizing gay marriage: “It is about giving the left the power to force anti-religious values on our children.” He also said that being gay is “a reproductive dysfunction.”

A studio executive for Ender’s Game , the graphic novel that Card wrote that has been turned into a movie which will hit cinemas in November, stated that Summit should “keep him out of the limelight as much as possible.”

Another stated, “I don’t think you take him to any fanboy event. This will definitely take away from their creative and their property.”

Ironically, DC Comics recently released its newest issue of Batwoman , which saw the superhero propose to her girlfriend. The company celebrated this decision by releasing the statement, “As content creators we steadfastly support freedom of expression, however the personal views of individuals associated with DC Comics are just that – personal views – and not those of the company itself.”

Dan Didio, DC Comics co-publisher, also recently praised fans reception of gay characters was “extraordinarily positive.” 15,000 people have recently signed an online petition requesting that DC Comics drop Card.
