Suicide Squad is finally going to open this Friday. Things for Warner Bros. weren’t completely great this year in terms of their DC Extended Universe, given the extremely polarizing reviews of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice . This means David Ayer’s Suicide Squad had a lot to live up to and prove, for critics and general audiences. But luckily, the movie looks like it might have a very successful opening weekend.
The Wrap reports that Suicide Squad ‘s box office could earn between $130 million and $140 million on its opening weekend this Friday. Although the movie is tracking up to $140 million, Warner Bros. is estimating the opening weekend numbers may be a bit lower, coming in at $125 million. Either way, it will still be a highly successful financial weekend for the film as well as the studio.
During the last month or so, experts were estimating that its opening weekend numbers would hit somewhere close to $115 million, which clearly means box office analysts have been feeling much more optimistic and generous with the film’s financial success. And for this weekend, in the month of August, the competition with Marvel is going to be palpable.
Marvel Studios’ 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy debuted with $94.3 million at the box office during its opening weekend. Suicide Squad ‘s tracking numbers tell us that it has a very good chance at beating those Marvel numbers, which would be another great win for WB. It’s also quite ironic since both movies are based on comic properties that were not extremely well-known by general audiences. Both Suicide Squad and Guardians had a similar promotional campaign, boasting an ensemble cast and a fantastic soundtrack.
Another movie Suicide Squad has the potential to beat, in terms of opening weekend box office, is Pixar’s Finding Dory . The animated sequel opened in June with $135 million, the third highest opening of 2016.
Although, Suicide Squad won’t likely reach Captain America: Civil War ‘s opening weekend numbers. Civil War debuted in May with $179,139,142 on its opening weekend.

The cast and director of Suicide Squad celebrated on Monday for the film’s world premiere at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Will Smith praised the film’s racial diversity while on stage, addressing the screaming crowd.
“What I love about working with this group, it’s a rainbow — it’s all races, creeds and colors,” Smith said, according to The Hollywood Reporter . “It’s the diversity and inclusion that this country is supposed to be about.”

Suicide Squad ‘s diverse cast includes Smith, Viola Davis, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jay Hernandez, Adam Beach, and Karen Fukuhara. Hernandez spoke with THR and expressed his excitement to be part of the project.
“Having a Latino superhero is long overdue — we’ve been waiting for it, and David Ayer had the balls to put it out there,” Hernandez said. “I can’t believe I’m the first one. It’s pretty ridiculous not to have diversity in a movie like this.”
Director David Ayer touched on the tone of the film and how the characters being super-villains is an element that makes it stand out from the rest.
“It’s a bunch of bad guys with good hearts,” Ayer said. “I think there’s room for different versions of this superhero genre. It’s like the cowboy movie, which was Hollywood’s bread and butter for 70 years. We’re gonna continually find ways to reinvent this.”
Ayer may have gotten a little too excited during the screening of Suicide Squad . The director reacted to someone shouting in the audience and briefly threw more gas on the flame for this Marvel vs. DC war that some comic book fans may be a part of.
“F*** Marvel!” echoed Ayer, after someone in the audience shouted it first. But he later took to Twitter to apologize .
Sorry about getting caught up in the moment and saying f*ck Marvel. Someone said it. I echoed. Not cool. Respect for my brother filmmakers.
