Yes, people, this is apparently real. And it’s happening. A Street Fighter X G.I. Joe mash-up will be brought to you in comic form. The “event,” as Polygon describes it , is set to begin early next year. The comics will be headed up by IDW Publishing, Capcom has revealed.
The project is a long ways off, so details are scarce at the moment. Will it tie in with Street Fighter V ? Is it a new story entirely? Considering the combatants of Street Fighter are being paired up with characters from G.I. Joe , many are inclined to believe it will be the latter.
What we do know is that it will be a six-issue mini-series, thanks to Hasbro. As for whether the characters will be fighting with or against each other, that’s up in the air. That being said, we can think of some interesting match-ups from both universes.
As the comic heads into production, Capcom is still hard at work on Street Fighter V , the next installment (but certainly not the 5th) in the franchise that is almost entirely responsible for spawning a new, thriving genre. In fact, a Street Fighter V beta is just around the corner.
IDW Publishing also has other big things in the works. After the reveal following the close of San Diego Comic-Con, the publisher announced it will be taking us back to Back to the Future — in the present.
“We’ve subtitled this ‘Untold Tales and Alternate Timelines’ because for years, fans have asked questions about things that happened before the events of the trilogy, in between the events of the trilogy, or in our alternate realities,” said original movie creator/screenwriter Bob Gale, who involved in the project.
“In this series, we’ll finally answer some of those questions, with our focus squarely on the characters everyone loves.”
What do you think, readers? Would you be interested in reading Street Fighter X G.I. Joe when it hits comic stores near you early next year? What would be your dream character battle between the two franchises?
