Sons of Anarchy star Katey Sagal played tough-talking, murderous Gemma Teller for seven seasons and made fans thankful every day that she was not their mom. Now Sagal has been named one of the top TV villains of all-time, but will an Emmy nod follow ?
When it comes to TV villains, there are certainly a number of top choices for who is the most ruthless. With that in mind, a recent list of top villains surfaced on B*tch Entertainment that featured a number of different characters on Kurt Sutter’s biker drama, Sons of Anarchy .
The list included the top 25 villains in TV, and rounding out the top 10 were five characters from Sons of Anarchy . Sutter’s wife, Katey Sagal, made it as number 9, finishing just ahead of Damon Pope, played by Harold Perrineau.
Upon learning that she made the lists top 10 villains, Sagal took to Facebook to share her excitement. “Guess who made the top 10?”
Meanwhile, Lee Toric (Donal Logue) came in at number 8 while Agent Stahl (Ally Walker) was placed at number 6. However, none of those SOA characters managed to beat out the biker gang’s leader and Gemma’s husband, Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman), who managed to finish fourth on the list, edging out The Walking Dead’s most famous villain, The Governor.
Having so many villains from one series included on a top 25 list is impressive for creator Kurt Sutter, who is currently working on his newest series, The Bastard Executioner . If Sons of Anarchy is any indication, then the new show, which centers on a violent warrior knight under the charge of King Edward I, is sure to feature a whole new set of Sutter-inspired villains.
Deadline reports that Sagal is among the stars of TBX . She is joined by newcomer Lee Jones, True Blood’s Stephen Moyer, Sam Spruell, fellow SOA alum Timothy V. Murphy, Flora Spencer-Longhurst, Darren Evans, Danny Sapani, Sarah White (Sagal and Sutter’s daughter), and Sarah Sweeney.
Although Sagal’s role as Gemma Teller was critically acclaimed, the folks at the Emmys have yet to recognize her for the role. She did win a Golden Globe in 2011, but her work in Season 7 was among the best work she has ever done.
Carter Matt is among the TV news outlets calling for Sagal to finally get recognized.
“Remember when Sagal won a Golden Globe for playing Gemma? It’s about time that the Emmys followed up on that, given that season 7 of Sons was the finest work of Sagal’s very-long and very-impressive career. Her final scene with Charlie Hunnam was brimming with energy and intensity, and the most impressive part of it was that the two conveyed the heartbreak they did without even facing each other.”
Catch Katey Sagal in The Bastard Executioner when it premieres this fall. Hopefully she will also be nominated for her work as one of the top TV villains of all-time on Sons of Anarchy when the Emmy nominations are announced this July.
