Sons of Anarchy fans might be in for an exciting new year.
Kurt Sutter is currently in the middle of working on a Sons of Anarchy spin-off and prequel. With the prequel expected to start production in 2017, will Charlie Hunnam reprise his role as Jax Teller?
Christian Today is reporting that Sutter recently tweeted about the upcoming spin-off, Mayans MC , which is currently in development.
“Working hard on some sweet surprises,” Sutter wrote alongside a photo of Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera).
The spin-off will focus on the Mayans Motorcycle Club, one of SAMCRO’s biggest rival gang on Sons of Anarchy .
Sutter and Elgin James are crafting a story that explores the outlaw motorcycle club through the lens of Latino culture.
“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice,” Sutter said after hiring James. “Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”
James has a history that reads like a character in Sutter’s universe. The writer was involved in a street gang that targeted drug dealers and neo-Nazi skinheads before turning his life around and getting into the entertainment business.
Based on the spin-off’s timeline, it doesn’t appear likely that Hunnam will be involved in the project. After all, Jax died during the Season 7 finale, and the events in the spin-off are likely going to occur after the Sons of Anarchy timeline.
FX has not issued a release date for Mayans MC , though filming for the series is expected to begin at any time.
Meanwhile, Parent Herald revealed that Sutter is also working on a Sons of Anarchy prequel , which has not been titled. The prequel is reportedly going to focus on the founding members of SAMCRO, including Jax’s father, John Teller.
Sadly, Hunnam already discussed the chances of him appearing in the prequel, and it doesn’t sound promising.
“I do believe it is happening, but I don’t think I’m a part of it, because I wasn’t born when that was happening,” Hunnam shared. “I believe it’s sort of like an origin of motorcycle culture in America. I’m really just making it up, because I don’t know any facts.”
Of course, that could change in future, especially if the prequel lasts more than one season.
If Hunnam does return to TV as Jax, fans can expect a trimmed down version of the biker.
“You know I’ve been doing a lot of very physical work that last 16, 17 years and I’m starting to get tired. I’m starting to get old,” Hunnam said. “I want to eat some hamburgers and just relax.”
Hunnam continued, “To feel formidable and to feel like I could hold my own in you know, against these big dudes that they put me up against, I needed to train every day. And it was much more about like feeling the right psychology than like some sort of aesthetic… or desire.”
For now, it doesn’t sound like Hunnam is ready to go back to the Sons of Anarchy universe anytime soon. In fact, according to Game N Guide , an alleged feud with Sutter might prevent Hunnam from ever working with the Sons of Anarchy creator again.
Hunnam and Sutter are rumored to be feuding, though the reports of a strained relationship have not been confirmed.
Indeed, Sutter claims that he and Hunnam are still great friends and that there is no beef between them.
Sutter has not released many details about the coming prequel, and FX has yet to announce an official premiere date for the new series.
