Sir Alex Ferguson insists that Wayne Rooney will not leave Manchester United at the end of the current campaign.
Rumours have run rampant and wild in the English press over whether the United forward will bolt the club in the summer after starting on the bench for the crucial Champions League clash with Real Madrid last Tuesday.
The Red Devils were knocked out of Europe’s most prestigious club competition, and Rooney did not see the field until the Premier League outfit was a man down in the second half at Old Trafford.
This has led to widespread speculation that the English international will seek new pastures in the summer, but United manager Alex Ferguson insists that Wayne Rooney will stay put .
“Rooney will be here next year, you have my word on it,” Ferguson said. “There is no issue between Wayne and I and to suggest we don’t talk to each other is nonsense.”
This is not the first time that Rooney has been linked with a departure away from Old Trafford, as the 27 year old flirted with Manchester City in 2010.
Rooney has now once again been linked with a move to the blue half of Manchester, but City manager Roberto Mancini did his best to cool such talk.
“I think that Rooney is one of the best strikers in Europe, but I think it is difficult he can leave Manchester United, I don’t think so,” he stated.
United currently hold a healthy 12-point lead over its city rivals with 10 games remaining, and Rooney has played a major role, scoring 11 goals and providing nine assists in 20 league matches.
Sir Alex Ferguson will be keen to nip talk of Wayne Rooney leaving Manchester United in the bud and concentrate solely on clinching the Premier League title in the weeks to come.
