‘Sharknado’ Sequel Not Happening, Despite Cult Success

Syfy’s surprise cult hit Sharknado might not be getting a sequel, even though the film was a campy runaway success among the Internet crowd this week.

Rumors that a sequel had been greenlit hit social media almost immediately after the film’s strange success this week, but a representative for the Syfy network says that reported discussions for a sequel are unconfirmed .

That doesn’t mean a sequel won’t happen, it just seems that Syfy isn’t thinking about it yet .

But given the fact that Sharknado boasted 1.37 million viewers with its Thursday night premiere and went viral on social media sites like Twitter , you have to wonder what they’re waiting for.

The network estimated that as many as 5,000 tweets were going out per minute about the TV film. It trended all evening and on Friday, racking up 387,000 mentions across all social platforms.

Sharknado is Syfy’s most social telecast ever, and was the most social program on TV Thursday.

Given the film’s popularity, Syfy announced that an encore broadcast will air next Thursday (July 18) at 7/6c.

The film follows a bar owner named Fin (played by Ian Ziering) who teams up with his ex-wife April (played by Tara Reid) to investigate an ecological phenomenon that has sharks swimming through the streets of L.A. and dropping out of the sky.

If a sequel does happen, both of the film’s leads have said that they’re up for it.

“Why not?” Reid told TMZ . “[The movie] was so ridiculous, you know? Like it’s almost so bad that it’s good… I’m just so glad that people saw the humor in it that I did. It’s just hilarious.”

Ziering told The Huffington Post that he is “definitely down” for another Sharknado .
