Another surfer has been attacked by a shark in Hawaii, making that the second such incident in less than a week.
16-year-old surfer, Jimmy “Ulu Boy” Napeahi, was left with severe leg injuries after the attack. The Hawaii County Fire Department have confirmed that the teenager suffered puncture wounds and lacerations to both of his legs after he was attacked on Sunday afternoon.
The shark attack occurred on the southeast of Hilo, and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources have since closed ocean waters along the coastline of Pohoiki because of the ordeal.
Napeahi was surfing in the area known as, Dead Trees, at 1.30pm when he was lunged at by a shark from behind. His relatives have since confirmed that the 16-year-old was the victim of the abuse.
Officials have now confirmed that the nautical beast was around 8 feet in length, and was grey-colored.
Isaac Belisaro, a surfer who witnessed the ordeal, told KHON2 , “He was coming down the wave and a shark came from the side and took him out by the leg and that’s all I could see right from there.”
Napeahi then made his way out of the water where a lifeguard then treated his injuries while first responders were called to help him even further. It has been reported that a rescuer used a surf leash to stop the bleeding.
After being taken to the Pahoa Fire Station to originally be treated, Napeahi was then airlifted to Hilo Medical Center. His uncle has since confirmed that he is now in a good condition and his life isn’t deemed to be in a serious condition.
On Wednesday, a 20-year-old German tourist lost her arm after a shark attacked her while she snorkeled in Maui. Jana Lutteropp was only 50 yards of Makena’s Palauea beach when the incident occurred.
