Shailene Woodley is juggling a lot of things right now, and she can’t be happier. The Divergent star is using all her star power to make sure that Standing Rock wins the fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline. She is using her relationship with Divergent co-star Theo James and her boyfriend Nahko Bear, as well as her Instagram account, to achieve social justice.
She has been out at Standing Rock to document, as well as represent Hollywood, on the issue of the Dakota Access Pipeline. She has been flooding her Instagram with pictures from the site, as well as live reporting using Facebook.
Check out her latest post about Standing Rock.
This kind of advocacy had gotten her arrested a couple of weeks ago. She used her arrest as a leverage to make sure that the people know the actual social justice movement that is going on in North Dakota.
“I was arrested on Oct. 10, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a holiday where America is meant to celebrate the indigenous people of North America,” the actress wrote for Time . “I was in North Dakota, standing in solidarity, side-by-side with a group of over 200 water protectors, people who are fighting the Dakota Access Pipeline.”
“I was in North Dakota, standing side by side with Native Americans,” she continued. “You know, those who were here before us. Well, guess what, America? They’re still here. And they are still fighting the good fight. A fight that serves each and every one of us.”
While the fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline is still going on, this resulted in Shailene receiving an award presented by the heavyweights in Hollywood . She probably knows that there are people who deserve this award more than she does, but she was happy to accept it on behalf of the people in North Dakota right now.
“Shailene Woodley looked glamorous at the InStyle Awards in Los Angeles on Monday, donning a multi-patterned halter neck dress from Sophie Theallet’s Fall 2016 ready-to-wear collection,” reports People Magazine .
“It means a lot,” Shailene Woodley said. “This is the first time the InStyle Awards has had an advocacy award. Because of this election and because of so many issues that are facing not only our country but our planet, everyone is becoming aware and expanding our consciousness and expanding our horizons to include philanthropy in all aspects of our lives.”
Nahko Bear, her boyfriend, also has been doing his part in the movement as well. Knowing that he is part-Native meant that this issue is very close to his heart. His Instagram description reads, “indigenous resistance since 1986,” which shows his dedication to the fight that was before, and will continue after Standing Rock.
He also said in an interview that he deems his participation at Standing Rock personally important.
“It’s a pretty remarkable time,” Shailene’s boyfriend said to the Bay Bridged . “[J]ust the amount of tribes that are being represented right now.”
“Obviously there is the huge media blackout going on right now, it’s sad to observe on the one hand how much our country turns the other way, you know, and with the amount of numbers that are showing up it is getting some attention,” he continued. “[H]owever, obviously the mainstream media is going to paint the picture of wild and out-of-control activists and natives and how they are going to be ‘disruptive to what’s good for the economy.’”
Shailene Woodley’s Instagram also has been full of hope for the indigenous people fighting for their land and history. Her lyrical take on the movement has drawn the attention of everyone in Hollywood and beyond, showing that she has deep investments in the movement.
