Selena Gomez has teased a video on the eve of the 2014 American Music Awards, where she will perform her Justin Bieber-inspired anthem, “The Heart Wants What It Wants.”
In an Instagram video tagged to videographer pal Alfredo Flores, the 22-year old first seen sitting in a rehearsal space wearing a white dressing-gown and long black boots. The pop princess then opens up on what she hopes viewers will take from her AMAs moment.
“More than anything,” Selena began. “I’m just excited that people [can] everywhere, who are feeling what I feel and feel that , will get to see that.”
The actress-singer added, “And I just want people to be able to relate to that.”
With the power of “The Heart Wants What It Wants’” autobiographical lyrics, sheer musical quality, and the impact of Gomez’s turn in the video and visual itself, driving over 36 million (and counting) to her Vevo page — there’s little doubt many people relate to the song and its subject.
Whether you’re one of the emotionally-invested fans currently ranting online about either Justin or Selena, or radio and music industry observers who watched the single’s red-hot reception at radio and iTunes even before press, it’s clear there’s major buzz around the Latina’s comeback debut.
No doubt, the “Jelena” phenomenon is a huge part of the draw. The Disney alum’s single is the first time Selena has told her story about being one half of one of the most talked about and scrutinized celebrity couples in recent times.
And Gomez is clearly ready to share.
“Heart” is featured on Selena’s Greatest Hits package For You , which drops the day after the AMAs. Three tracks have already leaked: “Do It,” “My Dilemma 2.0” and “Forget Forever.”
The starlet has been teasing her AMAs rehearsals for a few weeks, first sharing her pre-performance nerves.
“Rehearsing for the AMAs . Wasn’t prepared for how nervous I’d be, I mean I’ve done this before. But now it’s just me. All of me,” the songstress wrote.
In another post, SelGo posted an inspiring message that appeared to address her fear of standing onstage as a solo artist without “the hoopla” of backup dancers, as she told radio stations in a Friday AMAs presser.
The positive quote, which was displayed on a black background with white lettering, read :
“I am in competition with no-one. I have no desire to play the game of being better than anyone.”
The post went on: “I am simply trying to be better than the person I was yesterday.”
A later reveal of Selena rehearsing “Heart” hinted at the poignant performance to come.
It was captioned, simply, “#AMAs.”
The starlet also teased an Instagram video, by which she wrote, “Eeeeekkkk #AMAs”
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that Selena and Taylor will be sitting next to each other at the AMAs. Cue lots of seat-dancing and lip-synching on the night.
It’s been claimed by one gossip site, notorious for peddling falsehoods while citing clearly invented “sources,” that Justin intends to “surprise” Selena by showing up at the AMAs in order to try and “win her back.”
Quite apart from the fact that Bieber’s idea of a great night out probably isn’t watching his former girlfriend perform a song that everyone knows is about him and doesn’t paint him in the most flattering light, the Inquisitr has learned that Justin is not attending the AMAs and “has no plans to ‘surprise’ anyone at the event” — according to two sources .
Indeed, as expected, according to Bieber’s latest Instagram, he has already jetted out of L.A.
The AMAs throwdown at the Nokia Theater L.A Live this Sunday, and will be aired on ABC from 8 to 11 pm EST.
In addition to Selena, One Direction, Iggy Azalea, Imagine Dragons, Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift (who is reportedly opening the show) and many more, are set to hit the stage.
