Selena Gomez needs an intervention to cure her of Justin Bieber? If the omnipotent Internet was convinced she needed help before, it’s downright belligerent now after the pop princess’ unsteady arrival to a Miami recording studio to visit Bieber.
We have no idea whether the actress was tired, drunk, sick or some other unknowable.
No-one but the parties concerned knows. But that hasn’t stopped a flood of tabloid reports including Hollywood Life’s intervention story from claiming Gomez’s interest in Bieber is an addiction rather than say, a personal choice she has every right to make.
Apparently the 21-year-old will have to be forcibly prised off the Biebs and his tattoos, Blue Steel expressions, perpetual shirtlessness — and whatever else he’s got going on that seems to require hook ups between the twosome every now and again.
Unfortunately for Selena, her friends’ plans to drag her kicking and screaming from Bieber’s dastardly embrace seemingly entails telling as many gossip outlets as possible. Which surely means Gomez will just skip town if and when she senses the hand of intervention is near.
Not too bright her friends, if the rumors are true.
“Their relationship is as toxic as possible,” an alleged Gomez source told Hollywood Life .
“They love each other, then they hate each other, then Justin hooks up with other girls,” the supposed ‘insider’ continued.
“They’ve talked about staging an intervention to get her away from him but [worry] it would only push her closer to him. Until he screws up again there’s not much anyone can do.”
But even if Selena’s friends seem resigned to the all-consuming pull of the Bieber-Gomez attraction, Internet commentators are gamely stepping up to plug the gap.
Or as Vanity Fair’s Richard Laws phrased it, “adults with nothing better to do than analyze the minutiae of the love lives of adolescents” have appointed themselves qualified to make judgments about Gomez and Bieber’s relationship as if they’re really acting any differently to any other youngsters.
The hormones, the sex, the arguments, the making up, the abruptly ended phone calls, the letters, the making up sex, the constant need to bore talk friends’ ears off about how much you “love him,” the grand gestures, the games, the skype sex, phone-sex, text-sex — gosh, it’s exhausting just remembering it all.
These kinds of affairs don’t need interventions. They’re part of what being young is all about.
All that living, loving, and learning through intense relationships and experiences ideally leads to growth along the way.
That said, after Gomez’s 14-day rehab stint in January at Dawn At The Meadows recovery center in Arizona, a source told E! News the visit was due to her difficulties in “letting go” of Bieber.
At the time, the star’s rep officially said , “Selena voluntarily spent time at Meadows but NOT for substance abuse.”
However, TMZ and a number of other outlets maintain Gomez went in “for a combination of problems, including alcohol, pot and prescription Ambien.”
Only those in the know can confirm for certain what issues Selena had or may still have. Her on-off beau’s contact with drugs came to light after his January 23 arrest in Miami Beach for suspected DUI triggered a toxicology test.
The report revealed Justin had traces of alcohol, marijuana and Xanax in his system at the time of his arrest.
No opiates were found in Bieber’s system, which contradicts a recent, probably false report by the tabloid Life and Style claiming that he “overdosed on sizzurp” before he was allegedly revived during a party at his now-sold Calabasas, California, mansion a few months ago.
Since Selena’s rehab stay, she and Bieber were spotted together over a reportedly PDA-filled Texas weekend last month, were seen in an intimate dance rehearsal video, later news of a duet , and now a brief Miami rendevouz.
Gomez was spotted at the Miami airport bound for Los Angeles on Thursday.
Into the mix of opinion, Selena’s parents — who have just been dropped as managers — are said to be unhappy about Bieber and Gomez’s apparent reunion.
Yet, it speaks to Gomez’s maturity that she feels empowered enough to fire her parents and undermines the belief that she is under the influence of Bieber, her family – or anyone else, for that matter.
But while rumors of interventions or sex-obsessions are the talk of the month, ultimately there isn’t and never will be a one-stop cure for late-adolescent relationship dramas. Either one of them will either wise up or they won’t.
More importantly, they may not even need to.
Justin and Selena began dating in 2010, went public in 2011 and initially split in 2012. Since then they have been seen together a number of times, with Gomez publicly defending Bieber on occasion throughout his wobble year. It’s easy to point fingers and bizarrely assume that as strangers we know better than them, but their relationship has likely included more high-points than storms.
And it’s a testament to that relationship that despite what gets thrown at it, Jelena is still here and still trying.
What is certain is that a toxic gossip media that relentlessly deconstructs their relationship with rumors while either criticizing them or expressing faux-concern, won’t help Justin and Selena figure it out.
Bottom line? Bieber and Gomez’s relationship isn’t public property. For all the over-invested tutting and head-shaking over the pair, we would argue an understanding of that is the only intervention they need.
