Actress Scarlett Johansson is receiving some backlash after designing t-shirts for Planned Parenthood. Johansson is unique in that she is one of the celebrities who decided to design t-shirts for the charity.
The t-shirts that Johansson designed are part of the charity’s “Women Are Watching” campaign. This particular campaign encourages young voters to learn more information about women’s health issues as well as women’s rights. In some people’s eyes Scarlett might as well be outside of an abortion clinic. A very harsh assumption to make given that Johansson herself is pregnant.
For Scarlett this was an important issue and one that she acted on when learning about the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on birth control in the work place.
Of the jarring decision Johansson said:
“I thought I had woken up in another decade. I was appalled by the thought of men taking away women’s ability to make our own personal health care decisions.”
She continued:
“Like many of my friends, I was appalled by the thought of men taking away women’s ability to make our own personal health care decisions.”
Life Site has called the actress out for this reason:
“Ms. Johansson seems to believe that if an employer does not pay for something, you can’t have it. That, my dear, is faulty logic.”
As for the t-shirts that Johansson designed, they’re hot pink with a cartoonish man’s face. The man’s face is surrounded with the words, “Hey Politicians! The 1950s called..” on the back is the second half of the message, “They want their sexism back!”
According to The Cut , another reason why Johansson is receiving backlash because some people believe the shirts are tacky.
“Unfortunately, the T-shirts are upsetting. The typeface, in particular, gallivanted down a particularly bumpy road to this cotton, but the unattractive centerpiece of the shirt is the floating head of a cartoon ghoul with a mid-century haircut and the smile of a demon. He appears alongside a severed hand holding up an old-timey phone. In conclusion: The best of intentions have gone awry, design-wise.”
