Sam Smith is arguably one of the most beloved pop stars currently working in the music industry. Smith’s fans adore him for both his musical talents and his proud and open personality. Sam’s critically acclaimed album In The Lonely Hour was reportedly written about a man who Smith fell in love with but didn’t love him back . But some have wondered what drove Sam Smith to publicly announce himself as gay, since some believe it shouldn’t be anyone’s business but his own.
Sam Smith recently spoke to Out magazine about his sexuality, explaining why he believes coming out was not a career move but an attempt to show other people how good it can be to express your true self. In fact, Sam Smith suggests that not sharing his sexuality with the world was out of the question. Sam believes that coming out can push the world one step closer toward the social acceptance all gay people hope to some day achieve.
“My aim is to tell people how good it’s been for me so that, hopefully, gay men or parents with gay children can look at my story and think, Wow, that’s how it should be. That’s what we can work towards, ” said Smith. “That’s been my whole motive — to not make it a talking point. My music should be a talking point. My voice should be a talking point.”
While Sam’s motivations may be for the betterment of society, it’s no surprise that a star like him would come out. Sam Smith has always been proud to be himself, regardless of what others think.
“I feel no pressure to live up to anything,” said Sam Smith. “I say what I think, act how I want to act, post what I want to post. There’s no one telling me to do this, lose weight, look like this, sing like this, write songs like that. I’ve just been allowed to be me.”
According to the Music Times , Sam Smith voiced the same opinion about being true to yourself on the Jim & Kim Morning Show . Smith is advocating for a new society where no one is afraid to be themselves and everyone accepts you for who you are.
“I would say, ‘just be yourself,’” said Smith. “Just be yourself. Don’t make it an issue… Let’s make it a normality. To make it equal, we need to act equal. Everyone just needs to focus on themselves as individuals and do what makes them happy — and be brave.”
