Details of the Roseville shooting and police standoff follow after the suspect was arrested Saturday morning. Authorities say the suspect, 32-year-old Samuel Nathan Duran, faces a number of charges after injuring five local Roseville police and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.
According to KSBW-TV , Duran surrendered at 12:30 am local time. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. After clearance he will be taken to county jail.
Speaking to local press, local authorities detailed the Roseville shooting and standoff which lasted nearly nine hours. As KXTV/News10 reports, the incident began around 3 pm Friday afternoon after Duran was spotted by law enforcement officers. Local police officers along with an ICE agent were checking apartments in a Roseville neighborhood.
As they did this, they spotted Duran riding a bike. They recognized him as a known gang member in violation of his parole and chased after him. The ICE agent followed Duran on foot, who fled to a nearby park. Duran then opened fire on the agent, hitting him in one leg. Officials say the agent will make a full recovery.
The Roseville shooting suspect then fled to a home not far away. When Duran broke in, a mother and her young child were at home. Fortunately, they were able to escape the home unharmed. Duran began to barricade himself in the home while firing at police officers outside. Through the night the suspect injured four officers, who officials say were hit by shrapnel or splintered fragments of a ricocheted bullet. The four police have been inspected and released by the hospital.
A fifth Roseville police officer was hit by a direct bullet from Duran. He is in serious condition, after being hit in the jaw. However, officials say he is expected to survive.
After hours of tense negotiation Duran came out of the home with his hands in the air after midnight. He had a gunshot wound in his hand and scrapes on his face.
As police exchanged fire for nearly nine hours Friday night, at least 14 nearby homes were evacuated. Some residents have returned home after the arrest of the Roseville shooting suspect, however ongoing CSI evidence collection left several residents out of their homes through Saturday.
