Ronda Rousey has been linked to roles in the Entourage movie and Athena Project , which indicates that Warner Bros. are going all out to establish the UFC Women’s bantamweight champion as an actress.
Variety reported that Warner Bros. are in final discussions to acquire the rights to Brad Thor’s The Athena Project, and the studio have already picked Rousey to star. Meanwhile, the 27-year-old has also been selected to feature as one of the female leads in the upcoming adaptation of the HBO comedy, Entourage .
Rousey’s hectic schedule over the next few weeks though means that it’s going to be very hard for her to find time to begin her assault on Hollywood.
She is currently training hard ahead of her next bout on February 22, and this encounter will see her take on Sara McMann at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay as she seeks to defend her title. After this contest she is expected to start shooting her part in the Entourage movie, which is due to begin in the middle of March.
However, after she completes her work on Doug Ellin’s big screen effort, a hole does appear in her diary. Rousey doesn’t have another fight lined up, and as The Athena Project doesn’t even have a writer attached it looks like she is more than likely going to be sat at home twiddling her thumbs for excitement. Or, she’ll be maintaining her physique in the gym. Probably the latter.
Rousey’s appearance in Entourage gives her an opportunity to establish herself in a popular property, while The Athena Project could see her develop into a bona-fide female action star with her own franchise. Or both could fail miserably and she’ll be forced back into the ring to earn her keep.
According to Variety, The Athena Project’s synopsis is as follows:
The story follows a top secret, all-female Delta Force counterterrorism team code named the Athena Project that is sent in to hunt and kill a master terrorist after a bombing in Rome kills 20 Americans.
Trouble ensues once the team realizes there’s more at play than a simple bombing.
Rousey allegedly fell in love with Thor’s book during her work on The Expendables 3 last September, and she decided to commit to the film even though a studio wasn’t involved at the time.
The New York Times bestseller has written the likes of “Black List,” “The Apostle,” “Path of the Assassin,” and “Blowback,” while Rousey is also set to star in Fast & Furious 7 , and she is clearly looking to emulate the career of former MMA star Gina Carano.
