Robert Pattinson’s full on, full Dior Homme advert touched down yesterday and it’s incredible.
Post the June announcement of the 27-year-old’s new role as the face of Dior Homme fragrance, the teasers and image releases since fade in comparison to a walking, talking, moving, Pattinson in action — which is what happens in the official and uncensored director’s cut of the ad.
Set to English prog-rockers Led Zeppelin’s 1969 hit “Whole Lotta Love” — in itself, a appropriate nod to Pattinson’s Brit cool and a great song to boot — the ad is directed by Romain Gavras.
The Greek-French director is renowned for his immediate, gritty style, an example of which can be seen in Kanye West and Jay Z’s 2012 “No Church in the Wild” music video.
Pattinson reveals he personally asked for Gavras as the man to deliver the kind of Dior campaign he could get behind.
Shot in black and white against a New York backdrop, the Cosmopolis actor is joined by the model Camille Rowe as they romp romantically through bedrooms, bathrooms, ballrooms and more.
In a Dior video interview, buzzwords for Pattinson are “visceral,” “anger” “bite” “wild” “freedom” and a desire to close what he calls the typical “distance” between viewers and players in fragrance ad campaigns.
The reportedly single actor following his split from his Twilight Saga co-star, Kristen Stewart, says doing the Dior campaign aligned with wanting ” to do something different.”
“Doing something that is quite mainstream but also edgy,” he added , “I think it would kind of fit into where I want my life to go.”
Definitions of the Dior Homme man offered by Pattinson sound very much like popular perceptions of this intellectually leaning movie star.
Describing the archetype as “someone who lives his life on his own terms completely,” he adds,” I think someone who’s just a little bit wild… [He] does whatever he wants, is a bit of a free spirit, [he’s] not really scared of anything, [and] can be whoever he wants to be.”
