Robert Gates: Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Could Go Away By September

The armed services rule of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” could be demolished by September 2011.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has announced that he is willing to support the measure, according to a report:

“If the military chiefs make their recommendation to move forward on the repeal before the end of the month, he will sign it.”

If signed before the end of the month the repeal would take affect in early September

According to Gates:

The training has gone well and people have been ‘pleasantly surprised’ at the lack of pushback from the troops.”

It will be interesting to see how the scenario plays out in real life, I lived with an enlisted member of the Army and at one point and then with three Marines and I sadly never heard anything even remotely close to acceptance from them of gay’s in the military.
