Ricky Martin and Ian Thorpe are not dating. Both men are undeniably handsome and openly gay, but that doesn’t necessarily make them a couple. Despite reports linking the two men romantically, Ian Thorpe’s manager James Erskine said the highly decorated 31-year-old Olympic swimmer is not involved with hot 42-year-old Latino singer Ricky Martin.
“I think someone is [putting] you on,” Erskine told gossip columnist Andrew Hornery of the Sydney Morning Herald , referring to the Ricky Martin and Ian Thorpe romance rumors.
Where did the rumors start? Sometimes it can be difficult to pin down the exact moment when celebrity gossip begins, but this seems to be a fairly clear-cut case. On September 11, 2014, celebrity reporter Peter Ford took to Twitter to write a series of tweets referencing a huge magazine deal wherein Thorpe was allegedly being paid to reveal “private stuff.”
“Happy times for Ricky Martin and Ian Thorpe & they’re about to tell the world in a mag deal,” Ford wrote. So who is Peter Ford anyhow? According to his Twitter profile, he is “the best informed showbusiness [ sic ] commentator in Australia.”
If Ian Thorpe isn’t dating Ricky Martin, then who is he dating? According to Who’s Dated Who? , the swimmer dated Lee Furlong from 2004 to 2005. The sports reporter is currently married to cricket player Shane Watson. They have one child together, a son named Will.
According to Daily Mail , Ricky Martin had been linked romantically to Carlos Gonzalez Abella , but the pair split sometime before the first of the year. The sexy singer and his stockbroker lover were together for three years before calling it quits. Martin has two sons. Matteo and Valentino were born via surrogate in 2008.
Lux also reported that the Ricky Martin rumors were false and noted that the singer was also rumored to be dating Spanish singer Pablo Alborán, among others, since splitting from his longtime companion Abella.
As previously reported by The Inquisitr , after years of media speculation, Ian Thorpe finally revealed that he was gay during an interview on Australian television. Before acknowledging that he was gay, the swimmer had steadfastly maintained that he was the opposite, even writing about his attraction to women in his autobiography.
“For the record, I am not gay and all my sexual experiences have been straight. I’m attracted to women. I love children and aspire to have a family one day. “
