Looking for some cheap land? If you’ve got $10, you can buy a plot of land in Reston, Manitoba.

The Canadian town, which currently has about 550 residents, is trying to entice people to set up homes in the town to build its economy. The Daily Brew reports that the town is currently experiencing a “mini oil boom,” and it’s hoping to expand its population by offering land for $10.

Reston, Manitoba official Ross Tycoles told CTV:

“We really took a challenge to try and repopulate and that’s really where we are. We want to make the town grow.”

ABC News reports that the Municipal Residential Lot Sales Policy requires people to put a $1000 down payment on their plot of land. The new landowner has 90 days to start construction and 12 months to finish building a home. Once they complete building their home, they’ll be refunded $990.

Economic development officer Tanis Chalmers said:

“You don’t have to live here full time, but you do need to put up a permanent structure.”

The initiative was started in 2010 with 14 lots for sale. Eleven of those lots now have houses on them. The initiative was so successful that Reston, Manitoba decided to put another 10 lots up for sale.

Most of the residents in the town work in the agriculture and oil industries, but officials are hoping that new residents open hotels, restaurants, or a bar. Here’s a video about Reston, Manitoba.

Would you move to Reston?
