Queen Elizabeth has always carried herself with poise and elegance. She is the poster child of debonair demeanor and is always aware of her surroundings. Despite appearing stern and stiff, most of the time, she does admire today’s trends. However, Queen Elizabeth cannot stand being part of the selfie movement. In her words, she ‘misses eye contact’ from those she meets.
Ambassador Matthew Barzun took a ride in an open carriage with Queen Elizabeth and was able to have a conversation with the royal matriarch.
“It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, riding to Buckingham Palace in an open carriage – I don’t think that will happen again,”
He went on to share the Queen’s view on mobile phones and selfies.
“How strange she finds it these days, with the crowds all standing there holding up their mobile phones.”
He ended his observation by saying,
“She was essentially saying ‘I miss eye contact.’”
Despite her dislike of the selfie, Queen Elizabeth has been known to photobomb a selfie or two, as is shown in the video below.
Queen Elizabeth has had her mobile phone for nearly 13 years and is rarely seen with it in her presence. The device was a present from the Duke of York, her son, and she has deemed it uncouth to use it in a public setting, something many restaurant and movie goers wish others would agree to. Prince William and Prince Harry showed her how to use the device, specifically sending and receiving text messages. Other than the phone, the actual brand and model of the device are unknown, the Queen also owns an iPod.
Although the Queen has avoided the use of her phone and dislikes the less personal nature of selfies, in lieu of eye contact and conversation, her grandsons have taken to being proactive in interacting with their fans via a selfie, now and then.
Madison Lambe, a 12-year-old visiting England, asked Prince William for a selfie with her as he approached a church. Her nerves got the best of her, and she was unable to take the picture. The Prince, charming until the end, took the picture for her.
“I couldn’t believe it when William came over to me. I asked him for a picture and he said, ‘You can’t beat a good selfie on Christmas Day.’”
Being photobombed by the Queen may be a rare occurrence, at least when she does so on purpose, but the holy grail of Queen Elizabeth Selfies will go to whoever catches her with duck lips and peace signs.
