The PS4 Game of the Year 2013 results are in, and The Inquisitr took the most logical route possible to determine the winner. We didn’t go by opinion because that would have drastically altered the results. Instead, we decided to use Metacritic scores to determine the winner. We took the critic ratings, added them to the user ratings (multiplying those by ten), and calculated the average. The scores given are out of 100.
We are covering every active mainstream console in the awards. The first console we are covering is our declared winner of this year’s console war . The PlayStation 4 had some surprise winners, and only one of them was anything we expected.
The Inquisitr ‘s PS4 Game of the Year winners are:
Third Place goes to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (average score: 80.5). Almost the definitive version of the latest adventures in the genetic memories of Desmond Miles, Assassin’s Creed 4 gave us a chance to actually be pirates in the Caribbean. Focusing on realism as always, Ubisoft went the extra mile and incorporated actual historical accuracy, throwing out the cliches made popular in film and books. Detail was everything this time around, and it shows in the water effects running off the ship, as well as the interactive properties of the plant life as you sneak through it.
Second Place goes to Trine 2: Complete Story (average score: 81). The second addition to the Trine series, this side-scrolling adventure game combines cooperative gameplay with puzzles and fantasy staples to make what turned out to be one of the best launch titles for Sony’s next gen console. You play as either Amadeus the wizard, Zoya the thief, or Pontius the knight, and either switch between them to solve puzzles and advance, or have other players help out. This is the first PlayStation 4 title to use stereoscopic 3D graphics.
First Place goes to Sound Shapes (average score: 81.5). What appears to be a downloaded title takes the prize of PS4 Game of the Year for The Inquisitr , having been rated the best game for the console in 2013 according to Metacritic . Sound Shapes is a side-scrolling platformer with a musical focus. Where the game really shines is in its stage creation abilities, where you can use the touchpad to place different instrument sounds wherever you like throughout the level. Various DLC exists for more variations on the basic stage creation, and stages can be shared with other players.
Flower might have won our award for PlayStation 4, had it been an actual game by definition. A video game is technically an interactive experience with a level of challenge and a set goal. It is still very early in the life of the next gen consoles, so you can probably expect to see more mainstream winners next year.
