Thomas Beatie, a female-to-male transgender who stirred up massive controversy with his 2007 pregnancy, has separated from his wife of nine years, according to People Magazine . The first known legal man to give birth was quoted during a taping of the television series The Doctors having said:
“Like all marriages, we have our ups and downs, and we’re going through a rough patch right now. At the moment, we’re separated.”
Beatie was originally born a woman who, through gender reassignment surgeries, legally made the transition to a male identity. Beatie’s female reproductive organs were preserved which allowed for him to become pregnant, resulting in a highly controversial photograph of a bearded man with a pregnant belly.
The wife of Thomas, 49-year-old Nancy, is no longer able to get pregnant, having had a hysterectomy. While Nancy had two children from a prior marriage, the couple have since had two more children according to People Magazine. ABC News reports that Beatie has had three children, daughter Susan and sons Austin and Jensen, all of whom were born as a result of artificial insemination utilizing donor sperm.
During the taping of The Doctors in which Beatie revealed his separation, he stated that he had undergone the final female-to-male gender reassignment surgery. In regards to his now complete gender migration, 38-year-old Thomas was quoted having said:
“Nancy hasn’t seen the new me yet.”
The Doctors episode with the first pregnant man , Beatie, will air on Monday, May 7.
Beatie was born female in 1974 with the name of Tracy Lagondino and had sex-reassignment surgery in 2002, however, he never underwent a phalloplasty in which an artificial penis is attached, until now.
