‘Point Break’ Gets A Remake — But Will It Be As Good As The First One?

Back in 1991, the world went crazy for the original Point Break movie. Keanu Reeves and the late Patrick Swayze bought sexiness and surfers to the big screen in a movie that combined the surf and a crime wave. Fans, while knowing they shouldn’t like the surfer Bodhi (played by Swayze) for the crimes he committed, still loved his zen way of living on the edge and enjoying life to its fullest.

Now, it seems Alcon and DMG Entertainment think they can match the original with their 2015 remake of Point Break . In the original version of Point Break , Johnny Utah was an FBI agent sent in as an undercover operative to infiltrate a group of surfers, who they suspected were committing robberies. According to Variety , the remake of Point Break will cover similar territory . Although it won’t be surfers Johnny Utah is sent to infiltrate, it will be extreme sports addicts. While Utah was originally played by Keanu Reeves , this take on the character will be played by blonde Australian Luke Bracey, and, according to USA Today, isn’t a “former college quarterback, but instead a gifted snowboarder and motocross racer who feels out of place as a fed.” Meanwhile, Bohdi, played in the original Point Break movie by Patrick Swayze, will be replaced by Édgar Ramírez. In this take on Point Break , Bodhi will be taking his robbing spree to a whole new level, playing somewhat of a Robin Hood character. As Ramírez explains, they are trying to bring the original feel of the 1991 movie to the remake.

“[Bodhi] uses the thrill as a vehicle to serve what lies behind the rush. How deeply can you connect to yourself by becoming one with the geological forces of the earth?”

Here’s the synopsis for the remake of Point Break.

“A young FBI agent infiltrates an extraordinary team of extreme sports athletes he suspects of masterminding a string of unprecedented, sophisticated corporate heists. Deep undercover, and with his life in danger, he strives to prove these athletes are the architects of the mind-boggling crimes that are devastating the world’s financial markets. Filmed on four continents, North America, Europe, South America and Asia, Point Break presents extraordinary feats performed by the world’s top extreme sports athletes, and involves some of the most daring exploits ever committed to film. Extreme sports featured include snowboarding, wingsuit flying, free rock climbing, high-speed motocross, and surfing 70-foot waves.”

Now you can decide from the trailer if Point Break (2015) will live up to your expectations of the 1991 version.

Point Break (2015) will star Édgar Ramírez as Bodhi, Luke Bracey as Johnny Utah, Teresa Palmer as Samsara, and Ray Winstone as Angelo Pappas. The Point Break remake will be directed by Ericson Core ( The Fast and the Furious, Daredevil ) from a screenplay written by Kurt Wimmer ( Total Recall, Salt ). It will be released in cinemas on December 25, 2015.
