Constantly criticizing the US didn’t do Piers Morgan any favors and in the end he wound up being disliked by American viewers as much as their counterparts across the pond.
The British host’s CNN nightly news show has been canned by the network after suffering from dismal ratings in the 9 pm slot for the Atlanta based cable outlet.
US viewers didn’t appreciate the condescending tone with which Morgan would talk about American politicians — even if he had reason to do so — and institutions on a regular basis. The fact that he insisted in talking about soccer and cricket – not popular enough with the masses in the US — also turned into poor ratings for the outspoken Brit.
Over in Britain, there is really no shock over the announcement that CNN is letting Piers Morgan go shortly as many still have fresh in their memory his alleged involvement in the infamous phone tapping scandal that affected celebrities, politicians, and even royalty in England.
Morgan was recently interviewed by British authorities in connection with the investigation into the scandal and his time as editor of one of England’s most notorious tabloid magazines Daily Mirror , however CNN said the decision to end the show is not connected to the investigation.
Piers Morgan Live’s ratings are truly disastrous. As an example, last Wednesday he only drew 345,000 viewers, compared with 860,000 for MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, and 2.06 million for Fox’s Megyn Kelly, his competitors in that time slot.
However, many believe it was the way in which 48-year-old presented his arguments that made him unpopular. Case in point, his gun control stance. When he called the other side “idiots” time and time again, it left a bad taste in many of his viewers mouth.
Any time a celebrity — especially those who are not Americans — attempt to tell US viewers what is wrong with their system or laws it tends to turn them off, literally and figuratively in this case.
But Piers Morgan’s arrogance is not limited to the US. Recently, Charlotte Church — a British television presenter whose phone was hacked — dubbed him “a pr**k” after she recalled a failed attempt to a have public debate regarding the scandal with the axed host when she was 17, an experience she remembers vividly.
“He was such a pr**k.”
“His argument basically centered around, ‘You’re rich, you’re making money out of this, who the f*** are you to question it?’ I was like, ‘I hate you!’”
“I wanted to storm out and it took all my strength not to, and in that talk he basically told me about phone hacking and everything.”
So you see, Piers Morgan has detractors both in the US and across the pond in England and from the low ratings the show has been getting, it appears he won’t be missed by many in America.
