Still holding out for a Breaking Bad fix? Did Bryan Cranston’s coy interview get your hopes up for a return of Walter White? Let go of those fantasies and face reality, because the next best thing has started production: the Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul is already filming in Albuquerque.
Better Call Saul is going to be a prequel to the hit AMC drama, one that focuses on the life of Saul Goodman, erstwhile amoral legal counsel for Breaking Bad ‘s, Walter White. The series will find Saul, played by Bob Odenkirk, in brighter times, the days before Breaking Bad’s anti-hero rolled into his life and… well, they don’t call them “tragedies” for nothing.
Better Call Saul , though, will be more of a comedy, though it will bring back a number of series favorites from Breaking Bad . Jonathan Banks will be back as Mike Ehrmantraut, and Aaron Paul hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Jesse Pinkman popping up on the show.
Of course, Bryan Cranston set everyone’s imagination aflutter earlier when he said that one could “never say never” to the possible return of Walter White. Given Walt’s situation in the Breaking Bad finale, we’ll assume he meant Walt could show up in Better Call Saul .
The series has already begun filming in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the same place where Breaking Bad was filmed. The Independent got hold of images of the crew at work in an Albuquerque skate park, noting that the series is said to feature “twin skateboarder” characters. The interior scenes for the show will be shot at Albuquerque Studios, the same studio used for Breaking Bad .
Filming Better Call Saul in Albuquerque will no doubt make the show a local darling, much in the way Breaking Bad was. Breaking Bad saw weekly gatherings in bars and theaters, and it’s hard to walk 30 feet in the town without running across someone in a Heisenberg or Pollos Hermanos shirt .
Better Call Saul will likely debut on AMC in November of this year, so fans won’t have too long to wait. Worldwide fans of the show, though, will be able to pick it up on Netflix some time later.
