UPDATE: Crash Victim Has Been Identified As 70-Year-Old Janet Turnock, Former Preschool Teacher
Authorities have identified the victim of a single automobile crash that occurred on February 7 as 70-year-old Janet Turnock. The tragic accident took place on Milwaukee Street and Garrison Court around 12:30 p.m.
Police are still investigating the cause of the crash that took the life of Turnock, a former teacher at Kettle Moraine Preschool in Dousman, WI. According to police, the name of the driver still hasn’t been identified yet. However, they did say that the driver is expected to survive.
Turnock was a passenger in the vehicle that lost control on Milwaukee Street Sunday afternoon. It eventually ended up slamming into a tree on the north side of Milwaukee, which is located just west of Garrison Court. The speed limit in the area is 25 miles per hour.
Turnock was an active volunteer and school teacher at Kettle Moraine Preschool, according to the school’s Facebook page.
Mrs. Turnock’s husband is currently a member of the city of Delafield Tree Board. In addition, he served as a member of the Plan B Committee of citizens and public officials who received an outpouring support from the community to build a new city hall/library. The city hall and the library were built in 2009-2010.
Funeral services for the beloved teacher will take place this Saturday, February 13 at 2:30 p.m. at the Evert – Luko Funeral Home in Hartland. A reception will soon follow after the services. Family has requested donations to be made to the Veteran’s Memorial Riverwalk, the city tree fund and the city of Delafield to benefit Fort Cushing Memorial Park.
UPDATE: Janet Turnock Fondly Remembered By Those Who Knew Her
A parent created a beautiful metal-engraved portrait of beloved preschool teacher Janet Turnock and it currently hangs inside Kettle Moraine Preschool, a school she herself started back in 1980. Students, both past and present put together a beautiful bouquet of cardboard handprints that were on display at Turnock’s memorial service on February 13.
A Pink Heals fire truck was parked right outside the service and was there to honor a woman who was actively involved in the Pink Heals program in Delafield. As you may recall, Turnock, 70, died in a car crash on Feb 7. The accident took place near Milwaukee Street and Garrison Court.
Approximately 300 attended Turnock’s memorial service, including preschoolers and teenagers who graduated from the school.
“She was a very positive person. It’s hard to not have an impact,” her husband, Tim Turnock said. “She was an incredible lady. She loved to teach and did a great job of it.”
Family and friends described Turnock as a vibrant, energetic and positive person who will be missed dearly. “There is no way to sum her up in words,” daughter Susan Turnock Tully said.
Best Friend, Mother
Turnock got married to her husband Tim in 1968. They had two girls, Turnock Tully and Lori Turnock-Biwer and four grandchildren as well.
Mr Turnock and his wife spent time together from taking walks to playing volleyball on Friday nights. “We were the best of friends,” said Tim Turnock. “She liked to work hard, and she liked to play hard.”
Turnock was considered to be the “best mom” because of her positive energy.
“She was always super encouraging and supported us in everything we did,” said Turnock Tully. “She was good at motivating us without pressuring us.” She always had good advice and could always make me laugh,” added Turnock-Biwer.
Fantastic Teacher
Turnock started teaching at the preschool 35 years ago. Her husband said that even though Turnock attempted to retire on a few occasions, her work wasn’t quite finished just yet.
“She was an incredible lady. She loved to teach and did a great job of it,” he said. “She had amazing energy in everything she did.”
Turnock was a lovable teacher who enjoyed her job. She was so upbeat all the time that she got dads to dance and even got the students up and going as well.
“She was the driving force and life behind the preschool. Just to imagine it without her light here is hard,” said preschool teacher Jenny Nowak. “I can’t say enough about her. She was just a phenomenal teacher — the epitome of a preschool teacher.”
After the car accident that took Turnock’s life, the school was closed for a whole week. “When students came back, they were matter of fact about it, said Nowak. Many students have had pets die, so students said maybe Turnock is in heaven with them.”
Even though Turnock is essentially irreplaceable, Nowak said that the school will remain open till the end of the year or even longer. “We will do our very best to run the school,” said Nowak. “It will be an honor to run the school the best we can, as she would want us to.”
